The market for artificial intelligence companion applications is currently witnessing a remarkable surge in popularity and financial success. These specialized AI tools, which allow users to interact with anthropomorphized digital characters, are on track to generate substantial revenue. Recent analyses reveal a significant increase in both the number of new applications entering this space and the overall consumer spending, indicating a burgeoning sector within the broader AI industry.

New insights provided by Appfigures, an app intelligence firm, highlight the burgeoning demand for AI companion applications. Unlike conventional chatbots such as ChatGPT or Grok, these applications are designed to foster more personal connections by enabling users to engage with bespoke or user-created synthetic characters. These characters often embody distinct personalities, ranging from virtual friends and romantic partners to fantastical entities. This segment of the mobile AI market is experiencing rapid expansion, with 128 new applications launched in 2025 alone, contributing to a total of 337 active and profitable AI companion apps globally. The collective revenue for these applications reached an impressive $82 million in the first half of the year and is projected to exceed $120 million by year-end.

As of July 2025, AI companion apps available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play have collectively garnered an astounding 220 million downloads worldwide. The first six months of 2025 alone saw downloads climb to 60 million, representing an 88% year-over-year increase. Prominent applications in this category include Replika, Character.AI, PolyBuzz, and Chai, each contributing to the market's robust growth. The overall consumer expenditure on these applications globally has reached $221 million as of July 2025, demonstrating a 64% increase in revenue compared to the same period in the preceding year.

Further analysis by Appfigures indicates a concentrated distribution of wealth within this sector, with the top 10% of AI companion applications accounting for a staggering 89% of the total revenue. Additionally, approximately 10% of these applications, specifically 33 titles, have each surpassed $1 million in lifetime consumer spending. The revenue generated per download has also seen a considerable jump, rising from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025, underscoring the increasing monetization efficiency of these platforms.

The appeal of AI companions extends beyond niche applications, with major tech players also recognizing and entering this market. In July, xAI’s Grok introduced its own suite of AI companions, featuring characters like an anime girl, a male companion, and a witty 3D fox. Similarly, the recent upgrade of ChatGPT to GPT-5 sparked a notable user reaction, with many expressing a sense of loss for their previous AI companion, emphasizing the deep connections users form with these models. In response to this sentiment and other concerns regarding GPT-5’s performance, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, temporarily reinstated the 4o model. Furthermore, Google also made a strategic move into this domain last year by recruiting Noam Shazeer, the founder of Character.AI, a platform that continues to boast tens of millions of active monthly users.

Among the various types of AI companions, those designed to simulate romantic partners, particularly AI girlfriends, appear to be the most sought-after. Appfigures' data reveals that 17% of active AI companion apps feature the term “girlfriend” in their names, significantly outnumbering those that include “boyfriend” (4%) or “fantasy.” Other terms such as “anime,” “soulmate,” and “lover” are less prevalent in app titles. It is important to note that these figures primarily reflect successful applications; many other AI companion apps launched since 2022 likely failed to gain traction and were subsequently removed from app stores, thus not factoring into this analysis.

The burgeoning market for AI companion applications showcases a significant shift in how users engage with artificial intelligence, moving beyond simple information retrieval towards more personalized and emotionally resonant interactions. This trend, marked by impressive revenue figures and a growing number of new entrants, signals a promising future for AI-driven companionship.
