Amazon has officially launched its upgraded conversational assistant, Alexa+, in the Indian market, incorporating extensive support for the Hindi language. This marks a significant stride for the tech giant in catering to India's vast Hindi-speaking demographic. The advanced AI assistant boasts capabilities for more extended and contextually aware conversations, enhancing user interaction across various functionalities.

Amazon Extends Alexa+ Reach to India with Enhanced Hindi Capabilities

On September 16, 2026, Amazon announced the availability of its Alexa+ assistant in India, offering full Hindi language support. This new iteration of Alexa is designed for more fluid and prolonged conversational exchanges, retaining context effectively throughout interactions. The service is initially accessible to all Indian customers through an early access program, supporting both Hindi and English. Following this trial period, Amazon Prime members will gain free access to Alexa+, while non-Prime users will have the option to subscribe for ₹2,000 per month (approximately $20.85 USD).

The upgraded Alexa+ features a more expressive voice and is adept at handling intricate multi-step commands. Users can seamlessly perform tasks such as ordering groceries via Amazon Now or controlling smart home devices. A notable enhancement is the ability to switch between English and Hindi mid-sentence, offering unparalleled flexibility. Amazon has also integrated Alexa+ with prominent India-centric services, including food delivery platforms like Swiggy, Zomato's ticketing service District, travel booking sites such as TripAdvisor and MakeMyTrip, and restaurant reservation app EazyDiner. Furthermore, it supports popular music streaming services like Amazon Music and JioSaavn.

This launch follows earlier reports from TechCrunch in June 2026, which revealed Amazon's initiation of a testing program for Alexa+ in India, inviting users to engage with the Hindi-speaking assistant. Subsequently, beta testing for an English version of Alexa+ also commenced. Amazon first introduced Alexa to India in English in 2017, later adding Hindi support in 2019. Recognizing India's substantial population of over 600 million Hindi speakers, Amazon aims to penetrate this significant market with its smart devices and innovative features. Although specific figures were not disclosed, Amazon noted a 20% year-over-year growth in its smart home device sales.

The generative AI-powered Alexa+ was initially unveiled in 2025 and became available to all U.S.-based users in 2026. Throughout 2026, Amazon has progressively introduced its new assistant to various international markets, including the U.K., Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, and Germany, each with tailored local language support.

The expansion of Alexa+ into the Indian market with robust Hindi support signifies a crucial move in Amazon's global strategy for its AI assistant. By embracing local languages and integrating with region-specific services, Amazon demonstrates a clear understanding of market localization, which is essential for mass adoption. This initiative not only enhances the utility of Alexa for a vast user base but also sets a precedent for how global technology companies can effectively cater to diverse linguistic and cultural landscapes. The tiered access model, offering free usage for Prime members and a subscription for others, reflects a common strategy to incentivize Prime subscriptions while making advanced AI accessible more broadly. This could potentially deepen Amazon's footprint in India's burgeoning digital economy, driving both device sales and service engagement.
