The 35-year-old forward/center was detained in May in Jakarta, where he is currently in pretrial custody. Indonesian media reports indicate that Shaw is facing serious charges related to drug importation, which could result in a life sentence or even the death penalty under the nation's stringent anti-drug legislation.
Shaw's arrest stemmed from allegations that he brought 132 cannabis candies into the country from Thailand. These candies are reportedly valued at approximately 400 US dollars. However, Shaw maintains that his possession of cannabis was strictly for medicinal purposes, intended to alleviate symptoms of Crohn's disease, an incurable inflammatory condition. He emphasized to The Guardian from prison that cannabis is the only substance that effectively manages his severe stomach pain, clarifying that his use is therapeutic, not recreational. This incident has already led to a lifetime ban from the Indonesian Basketball League, a significant blow to his career, especially after winning the 2023 championship with Prawira Bandung.
Shaw has had an extensive international career, playing in various countries including Turkey, as well as in the G League, across Asia, South America, and the Middle East. For the past three years, his career had been primarily based in Indonesia, with his most recent team being the Tangerang Hawks.
