A Promising Talent Returns: Traore Bolsters ASVEL's Ranks
Traore's Journey: From France to the NBA and Back
Armel Traore's basketball odyssey has brought him back to France, where he will now ply his trade with LDLC ASVEL. The young forward's recent experiences abroad provided him with invaluable exposure to high-level competition, including a notable period with the Los Angeles Lakers organization. This diverse background is expected to greatly benefit ASVEL as they fortify their team for future campaigns.
Impactful Performance in Prior Leagues
Before his venture across the Atlantic, Traore showcased his skills in France's LNB Pro A season (2023–24) with ADA Blois, where he posted impressive statistics, averaging 10.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists over 33 games. His solid play earned him attention, ultimately leading to opportunities in the United States.
NBA and G League Experience: A Stepping Stone
Despite going undrafted, Traore secured a two-way contract with the Lakers in July 2024. While his court time in the NBA was limited, he made a more significant impact in the G League with South Bay. There, he demonstrated his potential with averages of 14.6 points and 9.2 rebounds on over 50% shooting in 13 contests. This experience, though short-lived, undoubtedly contributed to his development.
A European Detour: Gaining Spanish Exposure
Following his departure from the Lakers in February 2025, Traore transitioned to Spain, joining Basquet Manresa. This move allowed him to accumulate crucial experience in the highly competitive Spanish ACB league, further refining his game and adapting to different styles of play.
ASVEL's Vision: Integrating a Versatile Forward
ASVEL has expressed considerable enthusiasm for Traore's arrival, highlighting his athletic prowess, adaptability, and strong defensive presence. The club views him as a crucial component for their future success, emphasizing his blend of power, physicality, and ability to contribute effectively on both ends of the court. His signing represents a strategic investment in a player who aligns with their long-term objectives.
A Full Circle Moment: Returning to French Roots with Championship Pedigree
Traore's return to France marks a significant chapter in his career, reconnecting him with the basketball ecosystem where his journey began. His development path included stints with esteemed French programs like CFBB, AS Monaco, ALM Evreux, Metropolitans 92, and Blois. Furthermore, his inclusion in the French U20 national team that clinched the 2023 European Championship underscores his potential and winning mentality, making him a valuable asset for ASVEL.
