A New Era for Baskonia's Backcourt
Matteo Spagnolo Joins Baskonia: A Significant Three-Year Agreement
Baskonia has formally announced the signing of Italian standout guard Matteo Spagnolo to a multi-year deal, securing his services until the conclusion of the 2027–28 season. This long-term commitment reflects the club's confidence in the young player's potential and his immediate impact on the team's dynamics.
Impressive Performance in EuroLeague Propels Spagnolo's Move
The 21-year-old Italian arrives in Vitoria-Gasteiz following a remarkable season with Alba Berlin. During the 2024–25 EuroLeague season, Spagnolo showcased his burgeoning talent, averaging 9.6 points, 3.8 assists, and 2 rebounds across 27 appearances. His consistent contributions, playing an average of 20 minutes per game and achieving an efficiency rating of 8.9, made him a sought-after prospect in the European basketball market.
A Rising Star's Journey: From Real Madrid to EuroLeague Prominence
Born in Brindisi in 2003, Spagnolo's basketball journey began within the prestigious Real Madrid system, where he debuted in the Liga Endesa at the tender age of 17. Prior to his impactful stint with Alba Berlin, he honed his skills through loan spells at Italian Serie A teams such as Vanoli Cremona and Dolomiti Energia Trento, gaining invaluable professional experience.
Strategic Acquisition to Enhance Baskonia's Playmaking and Future Aspirations
Spagnolo's arrival is expected to provide a substantial boost to head coach Pablo Laso's squad, injecting fresh talent and playmaking abilities into the backcourt. This move is a clear indicator of Baskonia's ambition to contend more strongly in the EuroLeague, leveraging Spagnolo's creativity and skill to achieve their goals.
NBA Interest and Continued European Development: A Balanced Path
Despite being selected 50th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2022 NBA Draft, Spagnolo opted to remain in Europe, focusing on his development in a highly competitive environment. His decision has paid dividends, with his recent season in Berlin marking a significant leap forward in his maturity and overall influence on the court. He continues to be monitored by NBA scouts, but his current focus remains on solidifying his role and contributing to Baskonia's success in Europe.
