Bluesky's artificial intelligence assistant, Attie, initially designed for creating personalized social feeds without coding, is undergoing a significant transformation into a versatile research instrument.

The company recently unveiled a new feature called "Quests," which empowers users to query Attie for information, news, and trends circulating across the broader Bluesky social network, known as the Atmosphere. This functionality extends beyond Bluesky itself, encompassing all applications that integrate with the underlying AT Protocol. This development comes as Bluesky seeks innovative ways to expand its user base and explore monetization avenues, especially following a deceleration in its user growth, which currently stands at approximately 45.6 million registered accounts after doubling to 40 million last October.

Jay Graber, Bluesky's chief innovation officer and former CEO, highlighted that Attie's AI capabilities are geared towards helping individuals comprehend online information, thereby counteracting the spread of falsehoods and digital clutter. She emphasized the company's vision for Attie to simplify the learning curve for the AT Protocol and to make customization tools accessible to a wider audience. The revamped Attie experience is currently in a beta phase, with access gradually being rolled out to users on a waitlist. Upcoming enhancements include improved accessibility features and a refreshed logo, with more changes anticipated in the months ahead. Despite a segment of the Bluesky community expressing reservations about AI due to various concerns, the platform is balancing these sentiments with its need to generate revenue and ensure the continued development of both Bluesky and the AT Protocol. The company secured $100 million in funding in 2025, providing it with resources to explore initiatives like Attie and other potential services, such as premium subscriptions or tools tailored for advanced users.

This strategic move underscores a commitment to fostering a more informed and navigable open social web, enabling users to critically analyze information and tailor their online experience. By empowering individuals with advanced research capabilities, Bluesky aims to cultivate a resilient and truth-seeking community, fostering an environment where users can confidently engage with diverse perspectives and readily identify credible content.
