In the upcoming municipal election on April 8, the Boone County Fire Protection District will present a $6 million bond proposal to voters. This initiative aims to enhance fire safety by acquiring essential firefighting equipment and improving facilities. The district has assured that this bond approval will not lead to any tax increases for residents.

The proposed bond is part of a biennial funding strategy aligned with the district's long-term capital improvement plan. By securing voter support every two years, the district can maintain its fleet of fire apparatus and upgrade necessary equipment without imposing additional financial burdens on the community. In 2023, Boone County residents approved an $8 million bond, which enabled significant upgrades and the construction of a new fire station.

A significant portion of the $6 million will be allocated to purchasing critical firefighter gear. Over $3.5 million will go toward acquiring advanced breathing apparatus, communication devices, and clean bunker gear for firefighters after major incidents. Additionally, nearly $2 million will fund the acquisition of various vehicles, including a fire engine, air and light trucks, and specialized highway safety vehicles. These additions will replace older models and introduce new safety measures, such as attenuators for highway protection. The remaining funds will ensure all stations are equipped with gear washers and dryers, promoting firefighter health and safety.

The need for these improvements stems from the aging fleet and rising maintenance costs. Some of the current apparatus have surpassed their expected lifespan, making timely replacements crucial. Moreover, enhancing highway safety and protecting firefighters' health through better decontamination practices are top priorities. Voting in this election will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 8, with absentee voting available starting March 25. Supporting this bond means investing in the safety and well-being of both firefighters and the broader community.
