Bose has unveiled two new additions to its true wireless earbud lineup: the second-generation Open Ultra Earbuds and the entirely new Sport Open Earbuds. These releases aim to enhance the listening experience by focusing on unique design philosophies and improved performance metrics, catering to different user needs while maintaining awareness of surroundings.
The updated Open Ultra Earbuds build upon the innovative 'cuff' design of their predecessor, which pioneered the open-headphone concept. Bose's proprietary OpenAudio technology is central to both new models, engineered to deliver rich and personal sound through an unsealed design, allowing users to remain connected to their environment. For the second-generation Ultra, Bose specifically addressed bass performance, an area identified for improvement in the original model, by integrating advanced SoundDesign digital signal processing.
Neither of the new earbud models incorporates active noise cancellation, a deliberate choice to ensure users maintain ambient awareness—a key feature for open-ear designs. However, for clear communication, both earbuds feature Bose's AI-enhanced SpeechClarity technology. This system utilizes a dedicated microphone and a voice pickup unit in each earbud to isolate the user's voice from background noise, promising significant improvements in call quality compared to earlier iterations.
The Ultra Open Earbuds further distinguish themselves with an Auto Volume feature, which intelligently adjusts audio levels based on the surrounding noise, and the inclusion of Cinema Mode. This mode brings spatial audio capabilities to video content, expanding upon the Immersive Audio already available. Battery life has seen a notable boost, offering up to 9 hours per charge, complemented by wireless charging support. Compatibility with Snapdragon Sound and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth streaming ensures high-fidelity audio for users with compatible devices.
Meanwhile, the Sport Open Earbuds mark Bose's entry into a new category, designed with a focus on stability, comfort, and durability for active lifestyles. These earbuds also include the Auto Volume feature, and their tactile physical buttons are designed for easy operation, even with sweaty hands. With an IP54 rating, they offer protection against water, sweat, and grime. They provide seven hours of battery life per charge, housed in a charging case with a translucent, textured lid for enhanced grip.
The Open Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen are positioned as a premium offering in the open-ear headphone market, priced at £299.99, consistent with the original model. The Sport Open Earbuds are available at £179.99. Both products are available for pre-order now, with general availability beginning October 1st, promising a new era of open-audio experiences from Bose.
