Canada's leading provider of insured loss and exposure data, CatIQ, has revised its estimated insurance industry losses for the intense thunderstorm that affected parts of southern Ontario and southern Quebec from June 30th to July 3rd, 2026. The updated figure now stands at C$491 million, marking a 12% increase from its prior assessment of C$439 million. This adjustment comes as additional claims continue to emerge, predominantly within the residential insurance sector.
CatIQ initially released its preliminary loss estimate for the event in early August, placing the total at C$374 million. Subsequently, in mid-August, a second estimate was published, indicating a 17.5% increase to C$439 million, with growth primarily observed in commercial insurance lines. The latest revision to C$491 million demonstrates a sustained escalation in reported damages, emphasizing the widespread impact of the severe weather across the affected regions.
Caroline Floyd, Director of CatIQ, highlighted the unprecedented nature of the 2026 summer in Ottawa, which experienced its wettest season on record. She noted that nearly 120 mm of rain fell on July 1st alone, significantly contributing to the overall severe weather event. Floyd explained that high-resolution loss data revealed over 45% of personal line losses originated from just two Forward Sortation Areas (FSAs) in the Nepean vicinity, with more than 70% of the total incurred losses and over 60% of personal property claims stemming from Nepean and the southwestern communities of Ottawa.
The calculated loss figures by CatIQ encompass damages to both commercial and residential properties, as well as vehicle-related claims, and include additional expenses incurred during the loss adjustment process. The organization has also confirmed its commitment to issuing a further updated loss estimate for this severe thunderstorm event on January 5th, 2027, to provide a more comprehensive picture as claims processing advances.
In a separate but related development, CatIQ has also finalized its second insurance industry loss estimate for the Bald Range Fire, which devastated Summerland, British Columbia, and its surrounding areas in August 2026. This revised estimate reflects a slight decrease from the initial projection, now standing at C$293 million, down from C$313 million.
The ongoing adjustments to these loss estimates underscore the complexity and evolving nature of accurately quantifying the financial repercussions of major weather and natural hazard events for the insurance industry. CatIQ's diligent tracking and frequent updates are crucial for stakeholders to understand the full scope of these incidents.
