OpenAI has recently introduced an innovative feature for its ChatGPT application on macOS, known as "Computer History." This new addition is designed to enhance ChatGPT's learning capabilities by providing it with a comprehensive understanding of how users interact with their Mac, even beyond the direct use of the application itself.
The Computer History feature functions as a searchable timeline, documenting user activities across selected applications and websites. This advancement is presented as a more robust successor to the earlier "Chronicle" research preview. Unlike its predecessor, which relied on screenshots, Computer History records interaction events such as clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and app switching through macOS accessibility features. OpenAI underscores user control over this feature, making it opt-in by default. This means individuals must actively enable it and can specify which data sources contribute to their history, offering significant privacy management. It is exclusively available to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, with administrators in Business and Enterprise environments needing to enable access first. Notably, this feature is not initially available in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.
Users can leverage Computer History for various purposes, including recalling past activities, locating recently viewed documents, or generating summaries of their daily work. ChatGPT may also suggest transforming recurring workflows into automated skills. OpenAI has emphasized privacy and security, stating that Computer History does not record screenshots, screen activity, microphone input, or system audio, and it explicitly excludes private browsing data. Users have granular control over their timeline entries, including the ability to review, delete specific items, or clear activity for defined periods. Interaction events are temporarily stored locally for up to 48 hours before being processed on OpenAI's servers to create "memories," which are not retained post-processing or used for model training. The resulting plain-text memory files remain on the user's device until manually deleted. OpenAI advises users to exercise caution and pause data collection when handling sensitive information or communicating with others without explicit consent, due to potential prompt-injection risks from malicious content.
The integration of Computer History into ChatGPT for Mac marks a significant step forward in personalizing AI interactions. By allowing the AI to learn from a broader spectrum of user activities, it opens new avenues for enhanced productivity and tailored assistance. The strong emphasis on user privacy and control ensures that this powerful tool can be utilized responsibly, empowering users to decide what information they share with the AI. This development not only improves the utility of ChatGPT but also sets a precedent for how AI can intelligently integrate into our digital lives while respecting personal data boundaries.
