Users can protect these conversations using a four-digit PIN, or biometric authentication methods like Face ID or Touch ID on compatible devices.
A key distinction of 'Locked Chats' from 'Temporary Chats' is its persistent nature. Unlike temporary sessions that vanish from chat history, locked conversations remain accessible at any time, stored in a dedicated section. This provides an extra layer of privacy for users who might be discussing personal matters or planning surprises, preventing unintended exposure to friends or family members who might use their device. It's important to note that while this feature enhances access control, it does not implement end-to-end encryption, alter data retention policies, or change how ChatGPT utilizes conversations for model improvement, nor does it impact previously remembered information.

Should a user reset their PIN, all associated locked chats, files, and content are permanently deleted. This feature is broadly available across various ChatGPT plans, including Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, but is not offered for ChatGPT for Healthcare. The rollout commenced recently, indicating it might progressively become available to all users.
