In a significant move to enhance educational facilities and infrastructure, two Coastal Bend school districts—Gregory-Portland and Ingleside—are seeking voter approval for substantial bond proposals. These initiatives aim to address critical needs such as expansions, renovations, and security enhancements. Both districts have carefully crafted their proposals based on extensive community feedback and planning efforts, ensuring that the investments will benefit all students and staff.

Gregory-Portland's Comprehensive $205 Million Bond Proposal

The Gregory-Portland Independent School District has unveiled a comprehensive $205 million bond proposal divided into four key propositions. This initiative reflects over a year of meticulous planning and community engagement, focusing on various aspects of district improvement. Superintendent Dr. Michelle Cavazos highlighted that these changes are crucial for addressing immediate and long-term needs, including technological upgrades, safety measures, and facility enhancements.

The first proposition focuses on Career and Technical Education (CTE) additions and renovations, along with high school improvements and enhanced security measures across the district. Proposition B offers a unique financial opportunity by reallocating funds from debt service to maintenance operations. Proposition C emphasizes technology upgrades, ensuring every student has access to modern classroom devices. Lastly, Proposition D proposes the construction of a new Visual and Performing Arts Center to accommodate larger events and performances. With an existing auditorium seating only 300, this expansion is vital for the growing student population, now exceeding 5,000 enrolled students. Importantly, this bond proposal does not require a tax rate increase, thanks to significant contributions from local industries.

Ingleside's Targeted $49.9 Million Bond Initiative

Meanwhile, Ingleside Independent School District has unanimously approved a $49.9 million bond package for voter consideration. This initiative aims to address specific areas of need within the district, particularly focusing on expanding classroom space at Mircovich Elementary, the oldest campus. Superintendent Scott Kilgore emphasized the importance of preparing for projected growth in the coming years. The bond also includes essential safety and security upgrades, making the school environment more secure for students during emergencies.

Key components of the bond include adding 8-10 classrooms at Mircovich Elementary, installing advanced security systems like cameras and weapon detection, upgrading HVAC systems to improve comfort, and enhancing physical education facilities. Additional projects encompass parking improvements, demolitions, purchasing new buses, and implementing power backup systems. Every campus in Ingleside ISD will see tangible benefits from this bond, impacting every student positively. While there will be a modest tax rate increase of about 2 cents per $100 valuation, Ingleside maintains one of the lowest tax rates in San Patricio County, even if the bond passes. Both bond proposals will be presented to voters on May 3rd, marking a pivotal moment for the future of education in these communities.
