A Bittersweet Farewell: Cole Anthony's New Horizon with the Milwaukee Bucks
Reflecting on a Significant Career Shift: From Magic to Bucks
Cole Anthony is preparing for a fresh start with the Milwaukee Bucks, yet he candidly shares that departing from the Orlando Magic was far from easy. His candid reflections highlight the emotional complexities often faced by professional athletes navigating team changes.
The Unexpected Call: A Turning Point in Anthony's Journey
In a conversation with the Orlando Sentinel, Anthony recounted the surprising moment he learned about the trade that eventually redirected him to Milwaukee. The 6-foot-2 guard, who was the Magic's 15th overall pick in the 2020 draft, admitted his shock upon receiving the news from Magic president Jeff Weltman.
An Emotional Departure: Five Years of Dedication
“When my agent contacted me, and then I spoke with Jeff, I couldn't help but think, 'Is this truly happening?'” Anthony revealed. “I’ve spent five years here; this is the only team I've known since being drafted. It's a move that brings mixed emotions, and I will genuinely miss my time here.”
The Trade's Winding Path: From Orlando to Memphis to Milwaukee
On June 15, Anthony, along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and several unprotected first-round picks—including the 16th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and a 2029 first-round pick swap—was initially traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Desmond Bane. However, Anthony never played a game for Memphis, as he reached a contract buyout agreement and was subsequently waived on July 12.
Embracing a New Opportunity: Joining a Championship-Caliber Team
Just four days after his release, the Milwaukee Bucks secured Anthony, integrating him into a roster that boasts NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 2021 NBA champions are keen on making another deep playoff run, aiming to surpass their second-round exit from the previous season.
Driven by Success: Anthony's Ambition with the Bucks
“I view this as a remarkable chance to join a team with a proven playoff and championship history,” Anthony stated. “They've already clinched a championship. My goal is to integrate, contribute effectively, and do whatever is necessary for the team's success. I am eager to be a part of a winning culture.”
A Look Back: Anthony's Impact with the Orlando Magic
During his five seasons with the Orlando Magic, Anthony consistently delivered solid performances, averaging 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. He maintained shooting percentages of 41.9% from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc, showcasing his all-around contribution to the team.
