A cherished tradition of community engagement and generosity has been the backbone of St. Mary’s Central Catholic School's fundraising efforts. For years, dedicated volunteers have come together to transform the school gym into a vibrant casino-themed venue for an annual event. This Casino Night fundraiser, organized by the Knights of Columbus, has now moved to the Odessa Marriott Hotel & Conference Center but continues to be a testament to the unwavering support from parents and alumni.
The heart of this endeavor lies in the strong bonds formed among those who contribute their time and talents. Volunteers like Deborah Hubert, Carolina Keith, Linda Navarro, and Lyd Reyes have been integral parts of this effort, offering decades of service to the school. The core decorating team of eight women worked closely with the Knights of Columbus, ensuring every detail was meticulously planned and executed. As Navarro explained, while many parents participated, these women coordinated all necessary elements, creating a seamless experience that relied on teamwork and shared vision.
Inspired by the education and values instilled in their children, these volunteers emphasize giving back as a way to honor the institution that shaped future professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and speech pathologists. Principal Pat Salcido highlights another major fundraiser—the Rosary Calendar initiative, which begins in September. Families select dates on an October calendar, contributing amounts corresponding to their chosen numbers, raising approximately $60,000 annually. Coupled with the Knights’ efforts yielding around $50,000, these initiatives reflect not only financial success but also spiritual enrichment through daily Rosary prayers and culminating masses for participating families.
Beyond monetary contributions, the spirit of collaboration fosters deep connections within the community. Through events like Casino Night and the Passion Play, individuals bring unique skills and passions to life, whether designing masks or managing logistics. Such endeavors remind us of the power of collective action and shared purpose.
