Residents of Dexter have paved the way for a transformative period in local education after approving a substantial financial package aimed at modernizing school facilities. With a decisive vote of 3,461 in favor and 2,681 against, the Dexter Community Schools district can now proceed with its ambitious $242 million bond initiative. This approval allows the district to borrow funds over the next 30 years without increasing the millage rate beyond the current 8.5 mills. The new program will initially levy an additional 1.55 mills in its first year, complementing the existing 6.95 mills allocated for previous bonds.
The approved funding plan encompasses a wide range of projects designed to enhance both infrastructure and learning environments across the district. One significant change involves reconfiguring Mill Creek Middle School to exclusively serve fifth and sixth graders, consolidating younger students onto one campus. Additionally, Creekside Intermediate School is set to undergo renovations that will create a dedicated space for seventh and eighth graders, along with a community-accessible theater. Beyond restructuring grade levels, the bond also allocates resources for comprehensive upgrades at all district buildings. Plans include enhancing collaborative spaces, renovating restrooms, revamping playgrounds, and constructing a state-of-the-art multi-purpose indoor facility spanning 60,000 square feet. Wylie Elementary will benefit from a modern classroom addition, while outdoor athletic facilities will receive necessary improvements such as updated entryways, concession stands, and bleachers. Furthermore, investments are earmarked for upgrading arts and music spaces, purchasing new instruments, acquiring new buses, and implementing advanced technology solutions throughout the district.
At Dexter High School, enhancements will focus on creating a secure front entrance, expanding fitness areas, and developing a robust career and technical education hub. Science labs and upper-floor sections will also be redesigned to better accommodate contemporary teaching methods. Importantly, these changes align with long-term goals of maintaining financial stability; voters previously supported a similar bond measure in 2017, which expires in 2030.
