A recent comprehensive analysis has shed light on the performance of the ProShares S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF (NOBL) compared to ten other prominent dividend-focused exchange-traded funds over a full decade. The findings indicate that, despite NOBL's esteemed reputation for investing in companies with a long history of increasing dividends, a majority of its peers surpassed it in terms of total return. This suggests that while dividend consistency is a valuable metric, it doesn't always translate into the highest overall investment growth.
Dividend ETF Performance Insights: A Decade of Data
The study, conducted from October 11, 2016, to October 9, 2026, meticulously tracked the total returns of eleven dividend ETFs, assuming all distributions were reinvested. The ProShares S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF (NOBL) generated a return of 158.94% during this period. However, six of the ten comparison funds delivered superior performance. The standout performer was the iShares Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO), which achieved a remarkable 258.3% return, outpacing NOBL by a substantial 99.36 percentage points. Other significant outperformers included the Fidelity High Dividend ETF (FDVV) with a 252.34% return, the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG) at 251.34%, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) yielding 233.8%, and the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM) with 201.93%. The iShares Select Dividend ETF (DVY) also marginally surpassed NOBL. Conversely, funds like the SPDR S&P Dividend ETF (SDY), SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 High Dividend ETF (SPYD), and Invesco S&P 500 High Dividend Low Volatility ETF (SPHD) lagged behind NOBL, with SPHD recording the lowest return at 96.01%.
This analysis offers crucial insights for investors prioritizing total return rather than solely focusing on dividend growth consistency. While NOBL's methodology is sound for its intended purpose of identifying reliable dividend growers, those seeking maximum capital appreciation might find greater success with ETFs that employ different selection criteria. The results emphasize the importance of aligning investment choices with specific financial objectives, recognizing that different dividend ETFs serve varied investment strategies and risk appetites.
