In the heart of Chapel Hill, a unique initiative has been nurturing the academic and emotional development of local K-8 students for over three decades. The Communiversity Youth Program (CYP), spearheaded by the Sonja Haynes Stone Center, offers an array of educational opportunities and cultural experiences. This student-led effort focuses on mentorship, critical media literacy, STEM education, and social-emotional learning. Through dedicated volunteers and work-study students, CYP provides after-school support that extends beyond homework assistance, fostering personal connections and emotional growth.

A Legacy of Support and Inspiration in Chapel Hill Schools

Since its inception in the 1990s, the CYP has established itself as a cornerstone of community engagement at McDougle Elementary School and Phillips and Culbreth middle schools. The program’s success is rooted in its commitment to providing a safe and enriching environment where young scholars can thrive. Volunteers like A’mya Hendricks, a sophomore, emphasize the importance of representation and mentorship. "The scholars appreciate seeing role models who look like them," Hendricks notes, highlighting how these relationships help students feel understood and supported.

The program director, Safiyyah Elahi, describes CYP as a "little family" where everyone feels excited to be part of something meaningful. Field trips to places like the North Carolina Botanical Garden and career days expose students to diverse professions, from engineering to art therapy. Recently, the program received a significant grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, which will allow it to expand its reach to more schools in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area. This financial boost underscores the program's impact and potential for future growth.

Elizabeth Neal, a former volunteer and UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, reflects on the lasting influence of CYP. "It's inspiring to witness how both mentors and scholars grow together, building futures while making a positive impact on the next generation."

From this journalist's perspective, the Communiversity Youth Program exemplifies the power of community-driven initiatives. By bridging gaps between university students and local youth, CYP not only enhances academic performance but also cultivates a sense of belonging and possibility. As the program continues to evolve, it serves as a reminder that education is most effective when it is holistic, inclusive, and deeply rooted in mutual respect and understanding.
