ExpressVPN has launched its new Fortify router, representing a major advancement in device security. This new offering, constructed on GL.iNet's Flint 2 architecture, promises significantly improved performance compared to its Aircove predecessor. Key enhancements include faster Wi-Fi capabilities, an expanded array of Ethernet connections, and a substantial boost in VPN speeds, aiming to provide comprehensive protection for all connected devices. New and returning customers will also receive a complimentary 12-month subscription to ExpressVPN Advanced.
The Fortify router brings considerable improvements to network performance. It features Wi-Fi 6 AX6000 technology, delivering speeds of up to 1,148Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 4,804Mbps on the 5GHz band, supported by 4x4 MU-MIMO. ExpressVPN asserts that the router can accommodate up to 86 devices concurrently and achieve VPN speeds reaching up to 900Mbps, a notable increase from the Aircove's 330Mbps limit.
Under the hood, the Fortify router is equipped with a quad-core 2.0GHz processor, 1GB of DDR4 memory, and 8GB of eMMC storage. For connectivity, it offers two 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four standard Gigabit Ethernet ports. The device also integrates Multi-WAN failover and Smart Queue Management to efficiently manage demanding network traffic. Furthermore, it incorporates AdGuard Home for system-wide blocking of advertisements and trackers.
Operating on GL.iNet's OpenWrt-based networking platform, Fortify initially supports VPN connections via WireGuard and OpenVPN DCO. While ExpressVPN's proprietary Lightway protocol is not available at launch, the company has indicated plans to introduce support for it in a future update. This launch marks a strategic shift in ExpressVPN's hardware approach, with GL.iNet providing the core networking hardware, firmware, and platform, while ExpressVPN focuses on the VPN and privacy technologies. Fortify is the inaugural product in what both companies envision as a long-term co-branded router collaboration.
In conjunction with the Fortify's release, ExpressVPN is discontinuing sales of its Aircove and Aircove Go routers. Current owners of these older models will continue to receive essential security updates and customer support until 2027 for Aircove and 2028 for Aircove Go. Additionally, existing Aircove users are eligible for a discount on the new Fortify router by contacting ExpressVPN customer service. The Fortify router is now available for purchase from the official GL.iNet website for $199.99, with availability on Amazon anticipated soon. Regional pricing details are yet to be announced. The included 12-month Advanced subscription extends to ExpressVPN's applications and offers features such as ExpressKeys, Advanced Protection, and ExpressMailGuard.
The introduction of ExpressVPN's Fortify router signifies a significant leap forward in home network security and performance. With its advanced hardware, enhanced Wi-Fi and VPN speeds, and a commitment to ongoing support for existing users, Fortify is positioned to deliver a robust and secure internet experience for a wide array of devices. The strategic partnership with GL.iNet also highlights a new direction for ExpressVPN's hardware development, focusing on leveraging specialized expertise to create more powerful and integrated solutions.
