Figma has rolled out a suite of new functionalities, prominently featuring a Markdown-centric editor designed to streamline the definition of a company's design framework. These updates also facilitate the incorporation of design and code libraries and integrate seamlessly with the Payload headless content management system. These introductions, unveiled at Figma's inaugural Config event in India, are specifically engineered to empower both proprietary and third-party AI agents, enabling them to adhere rigorously to brand design guidelines during AI-powered creative endeavors. This strategic move aims to elevate design consistency and accelerate development cycles.

Central to these new offerings is Figma Specs, a novel Markdown editor that simplifies the process of articulating a design language. This document serves as a critical reference for design teams and AI agents operating within the Figma environment. Specs can function either as an independent file or be embedded directly within the canvas, offering flexible integration. Beyond its text editing capabilities, users can link to various Figma elements, such as on-canvas components, and integrate FigJam diagrams, code layers, and design assets, creating a rich, interconnected design ecosystem.

Furthermore, these enhancements enable teams to enrich their design context by incorporating comprehensive design libraries, code repositories, and specific guidelines. This centralized system provides AI agents with the necessary framework to maintain design coherence and adhere to established rules. This is particularly crucial given the inherent variability of AI outputs; Figma is proactively furnishing tools to guide AI toward more predictable and brand-aligned results, ensuring creative freedom within defined parameters.

In a related development, Figma's code layers feature, which infuses designs on the canvas with coding capabilities for the creation of more dynamic prototypes, has transitioned into public beta. This functionality, previously available in private beta since June, is now accessible to a broader user base following its announcement at the India event. Users can leverage AI agents to transform design concepts directly into code or modify existing code snippets for rapid prototype iteration, significantly bridging the gap between design and development.

Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, emphasized the company's vision, stating, "We perceive Figma as the pivotal hub where software teams converge to conceptualize and deliver their products. A crucial insight, given AI's transformative impact, is its capacity to accelerate development. While code production has escalated dramatically, the rate of product releases has not kept pace. This disparity suggests that much of the generated code serves exploratory purposes, aiding in product discovery and design." This perspective underscores Figma's role in facilitating an iterative and exploratory design process.

Additionally, Figma has expanded its support to over 20 new tools through its Multi-Cloud Platform (MCP), including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam. This broad integration highlights Figma's commitment to fostering a versatile and interconnected design and development ecosystem.

Building on its previous acquisition of Payload, an open-source headless CMS, Figma has now integrated it with its Figma Make product. This integration allows for the creation of dynamic websites and direct content management, streamlining the development workflow from design to deployment. The company noted a sixfold increase in Payload downloads over the past year, indicating growing adoption and the strategic value of this integration.

Figma's expansion into India, marked by the opening of its first office late last year, underscores its global growth strategy. The India office supports sales, partnerships, go-to-market initiatives, and product support functions. India represents Figma's largest user base outside the United States, with the platform being utilized by 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, signaling its significant penetration and impact within the Indian market.
