In the year 2024, sustainable finance reached unprecedented levels as the Climate Bonds Initiative reported a remarkable surge in green, social, and sustainability bonds. With over USD1.05 trillion in new GSS+ bonds aligned with stringent methodologies, this represents a significant 31% increase from the previous year. Notably, Europe dominated the market share while the Asia Pacific region witnessed substantial growth. Meanwhile, the U.S., recovering from a slump in 2023, reclaimed its position as the top issuer of aligned green bonds.

The findings underscore an increasing demand for transparency and robust standards within the sustainable debt market. The report highlights regional trends, with Europe contributing more than half of the aligned green bonds and sovereign issuers playing a pivotal role. In contrast, the Asia Pacific emerged as a major player, particularly with China leading the charge. Additionally, the U.S. showed a strong resurgence, driven by municipal green bond issuance.

Europe's Dominance in Green Bond Issuance

Europe solidified its leadership in the global green bond market by issuing a significant portion of aligned green bonds in 2024. The continent accounted for more than half of the total volume, reflecting a growing commitment to sustainability and environmental goals. Key nations such as Germany, the UK, and France were instrumental in driving this trend.

Europe's contribution to the green bond market was nothing short of extraordinary in 2024. By issuing USD388.4 billion worth of aligned green bonds, the region demonstrated a robust 17% year-on-year growth compared to the previous year. Sovereign entities were at the forefront, with the EU alone contributing EUR19.32 billion through new issuance. Among the top ten largest issuers, six were sovereigns, underscoring their crucial role in promoting sustainable finance. For instance, France continued to excel in this domain by pricing its fourth green sovereign bond, amassing a total of USD84.9 billion in green liabilities. This performance not only showcases Europe's dedication but also highlights its influence on setting global benchmarks for sustainable investment practices.

Rising Influence of the U.S. and Asia Pacific in Sustainable Markets

The United States and the Asia Pacific region made notable strides in the sustainable finance landscape during 2024. After a setback in 2023, the U.S. reclaimed its status as the leading issuer of aligned green bonds, while the Asia Pacific region emerged as a significant source of sustainability-labelled debt.

The U.S. experienced a remarkable turnaround in 2024, emerging as the top issuer of both green and sustainability bonds. It issued a staggering 1,413 deals, surpassing all other countries, with China coming in second at 351 deals. Municipal green bonds from American cities increased by 22%, reaching a record high of USD22.6 billion. Furthermore, the U.S. led in sustainability bonds, totaling USD14.2 billion across 840 deals. Meanwhile, the Asia Pacific region contributed 29% of aligned sustainability volume, overtaking Latin America and the Caribbean. A notable milestone was achieved when Thailand issued ASEAN's first sovereign sustainability-linked bond valued at USD868 million, spanning over 15 years. These developments indicate a shift towards greater involvement and innovation in sustainable finance globally, especially in regions previously less active. Such advancements are crucial for fostering a decarbonized future and attracting investor interest in environmentally responsible initiatives worldwide.
