Google Meet's "Take notes for me" function, initially limited to virtual conferences, has now been upgraded to support in-person interactions. This enhancement transforms the platform into a versatile hub for both online and offline professional communications, providing users with the ability to easily document discussions. The feature automates the creation of comprehensive Google Docs, including transcripts, key takeaways, and action points, making meeting management more efficient.

Google Meet Revolutionizes In-Person Meeting Documentation with AI-Powered Notes

As of August 14, 2026, Google Meet has officially rolled out an update that significantly enhances its note-taking capabilities, extending them to in-person meetings. This innovative feature, previously announced at Cloud Next in April, is now accessible to users on Android, iOS, and the redesigned web portal. Hillary Keverenge reports that this development marks a strategic shift for Google Meet, evolving it from a mere video conferencing tool into a central platform for all types of professional conversations.

Utilizing the new function is straightforward: users can simply open the Google Meet application on their mobile device or navigate to the web interface. A prominent "Take notes" button, situated next to the "New call" option, allows participants to initiate the recording. For those utilizing the web platform, selecting a meeting and then clicking "Take notes for me" followed by "Start taking notes" will activate the feature. The process offers flexibility, enabling users to pause, resume, or conclude the session as required.

Upon completion of a meeting, Google Meet automatically processes the recorded audio to generate a structured Google Doc. This document encompasses a detailed transcript of the discussion, a concise summary of the topics covered, a list of crucial decisions made, and clearly defined action items. The generated file is then automatically stored in a dedicated "Google Meet" folder within the user's Google Drive, with a direct link conveniently sent via email.

It is important to note certain prerequisites and functionalities of this feature. Access to "Take notes for me" is available to consumers with Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscriptions, as well as to eligible Workspace plans including Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education. The service currently supports eight languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, though only one language can be actively used per session. Optimal performance is observed for meetings lasting a minimum of 15 minutes. For privacy considerations, internal team members retain the ability to pause or terminate the recording at any point, preventing sensitive discussions from being documented. Host controls also allow meeting organizers to manage who can activate this feature.

The rollout of this functionality is phased, with Android users receiving access first, followed by web access, and iOS support expected by the end of August 2026.

This innovative step by Google Meet reflects a broader trend in workplace technology, where AI and speech recognition are increasingly integrated to streamline productivity. The ability to automatically transcribe and summarize in-person discussions removes a significant administrative burden, allowing participants to focus more on engagement and collaboration. This advancement not only enhances efficiency but also ensures that critical information and decisions from meetings are meticulously documented and easily retrievable, fostering a more organized and productive work environment. It underscores the potential of AI to transform everyday professional tasks, making them more seamless and less prone to human error.
