Google Messages has discreetly introduced a significant enhancement, enabling users to personalize their standard SMS conversations with custom chat themes. This update eliminates a previous limitation where such customization was restricted solely to RCS (Rich Communication Services) chats, broadening the scope of personalization for all users.

Google Messages Unveils Broadened Chat Theme Functionality

In an unannounced development, Google Messages has extended its chat theme capabilities to include conventional text messages. This means that users can now apply custom wallpapers and preferred color schemes to SMS conversations, mirroring the customization options previously available only for RCS chats. The change, which appears to have been quietly implemented, was first noted by a Reddit user on September 18, 2026, and subsequently verified on devices like the Pixel 6a, where a subtle notification prompts users to explore the new feature.

Historically, Google Messages allowed users to customize RCS chats with various colors. However, the introduction of comprehensive chat themes in August 2026, which Android Authority had previously identified in May, significantly deepened these personalization options. Crucially, the current expansion to standard SMS conversations ensures that the visual modifications, such as wallpapers, are applied only to the individual user's device. This differs from the older "Change colors" option in RCS, which affected the theme for all participants in a conversation. By making these customizations client-side, Google has sidestepped potential compatibility issues and paved the way for universal theme support across its messaging platform.

Users can access this new functionality either through the three-dot menu within a conversation or via the contact's information page. This move acknowledges that while RCS messaging is gaining traction, traditional SMS still holds a vital place in communication. By integrating chat themes into all message types, Google aims to provide a more unified and aesthetically pleasing user experience, allowing even long-standing SMS conversations to benefit from a visual refresh without altering the experience for the recipient.

This update marks a thoughtful step by Google to enhance user engagement and customization within its messaging application. It ensures that every conversation, irrespective of its underlying technology, can be a reflection of the user's personal style.
