Google has initiated the deprecation of its Gemini Gems feature, announcing its replacement by an advanced system named Skills. This strategic shift, previously hinted at through user notifications within the Gemini app, now comes with a comprehensive schedule detailing the rollout of Skills and the eventual retirement of Gems across its platforms.
The transition will affect both Google Workspace and the Gemini application. According to a recent official blog post, key dates for this change are crucial for users. Starting October 5, 2026, Skills will begin rolling out in Workspace, with completion anticipated by mid-November. A week later, on October 13, 2026, the Gemini app will also start receiving the Skills update, expected to conclude by mid-November. By November 17, 2026, existing Gems will be relocated to the Settings panel of the Gemini app, where they can still be created, edited, and utilized. However, a significant cutoff for business and enterprise users is set for March 1, 2027, after which Gems can no longer be created, modified, or used, and any “Ask a Gem” steps in Workspace Studio will become inoperative. For educational users, this final phase will extend until June 1, 2027, also affecting Google Classroom and other supported LMS platforms. All remaining Gems in the Gemini app will be automatically converted into draft Skills.
It is important to note that Skills will not automatically synchronize between the Gemini app and Workspace, meaning users wishing to deploy a Skill on both platforms will need to configure it separately for each. While current Gems and their associated “Ask a Gem” functions remain operational for a limited time, the creation of new “Ask a Gem” steps has ceased. Skills are designed to be accessible to all Workspace customers and personal Google account holders, clarifying their broad availability. Unlike Gems, which are single-task oriented AI assistants, Skills allow for the integration of multiple functionalities within a single prompt, enabling more sophisticated and layered commands, such as combining a “weekly newsletter” Skill with a “brand guidelines” Skill for cohesive communication.
This transition marks a significant evolution in Google’s AI assistant capabilities, moving towards a more versatile and integrated system.
