Gregory-Portland ISD Seeks $205 Million Bond Approval for District Enhancements

The Gregory-Portland Independent School District (GPISD) has put forward a significant bond proposal, totaling $205 million, to be voted on May 3. This initiative aims to fund various improvements across the district without increasing the tax rate. Following the success of a bond in 2023 and a setback in 2022, GPISD hopes this new package will address critical infrastructure needs, enhance educational facilities, and bolster security measures.

The proposed bond includes four distinct propositions designed to modernize and expand the district's resources. Proposition A allocates $75 million towards high school renovations, career and technical education, and safety upgrades. Proposition B seeks $50 million to reimburse expenses related to an all-purpose practice facility. Proposition C focuses on technology with a $20 million investment in student devices and equipment replacement. Finally, Proposition D sets aside $60 million for a new visual and performing arts center.

The board of trustees made the decision after consulting with a stakeholder committee and considering community feedback. The total project cost would primarily be covered by local industry taxes, with residents contributing only a fraction. Superintendent Michelle Cavazos emphasized that these bonds would not impact the current tax rate, ensuring financial stability for taxpayers.

In recent years, GPISD has experienced mixed outcomes with bond proposals. While a $176 million package was approved in 2023, a larger $242 million request failed in 2022. The current proposal incorporates elements from both previous attempts, aiming to complete unfinished projects and introduce new initiatives like the performing arts center. The district is confident that this carefully crafted package will meet the needs of students and staff while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

The upcoming vote represents a pivotal moment for GPISD. If successful, the bond will enable substantial upgrades and enhancements, ensuring the district remains competitive and well-equipped for future challenges. The community's support will play a crucial role in determining the direction and progress of Gregory-Portland's educational landscape.
