Hannover Re views insurance-linked securities (ILS) capital as a stable and expanding segment within the global reinsurance industry, as articulated by Patrick Horstmann, the company's Managing Director and Head of ILS. During a recent media briefing in Baden-Baden, Horstmann underscored the reinsurer's commitment to leveraging ILS for sustained development.

The firm has been actively bolstering its presence in the ILS market, notably through the establishment of Hannover Re Capital Partners (HCP), a Bermuda-based ILS platform launched in late 2025. This initiative began underwriting business at the January 2026 reinsurance renewals, significantly enhancing Hannover Re's capabilities in alternative capital. Horstmann pointed out the substantial growth of ILS capital, which now constitutes roughly 18% of the overall reinsurance capacity, asserting its long-term sustainability alongside traditional capital.

Horstmann further elaborated on Hannover Re's strategy to connect capital markets with cedants through its diverse ILS operations. These encompass catastrophe bond transformation, collateralized fronting, life ILS, the cat bond-focused manager Leine Investment, and the newly formed HCP unit. He described HCP as a platform facilitating third-party capital access to traditional reinsurance risks, supported by Hannover Re's underwriting, modeling, and structuring expertise. Despite being a non-risk-carrying entity employing collateralized fronting, HCP successfully deployed a low triple-digit million amount in assets under management by July 2026, demonstrating strong investor interest and alignment with its initial business plan.

Looking ahead, Hannover Re anticipates continued growth, particularly in third-party asset management through Leine Investment and HCP, where its market footprint has historically been less pronounced compared to catastrophe bond transformation and collateralized fronting. The company remains cautious regarding new avenues for risk sharing, such as casualty sidecars, due to the complexity of long-tail business and associated asset management risks. This measured approach reflects a commitment to thorough observation before engaging in highly intricate financial products, ensuring responsible and sustainable expansion within the evolving reinsurance landscape.
