The Hartford, a leading American property and casualty insurer, is once again tapping into the catastrophe bond market, seeking to raise a minimum of $280 million. This capital will be used to secure multi-peril collateralized reinsurance protection through its latest issuance, Foundation Re IV Ltd. (Series 2027-1). This initiative underscores the insurer's ongoing commitment to strengthening its reinsurance framework by diversifying its risk transfer mechanisms through capital market solutions. This marks the eighth catastrophe bond sponsored by The Hartford, a practice that began in 2004 with its inaugural Foundation Re transaction.

This new issuance builds on The Hartford's established strategy of integrating catastrophe bonds into its reinsurance structure to stagger maturities and enhance its coverage capacity. Following a successful $270 million multi-peril reinsurance bond last year (Foundation Re IV Ltd. (Series 2026-1)), the company continues to strategically utilize these instruments to elevate the upper limits of its occurrence catastrophe reinsurance. The current $200 million Foundation Re IV 2023-1 issuance, providing multi-peril catastrophe reinsurance, is set to mature by the end of 2026, making this new, larger offering a timely and prudent move to ensure continuous and expanded protection.

The Foundation Re IV Ltd., a Bermuda-based special purpose insurer, will serve as the issuing vehicle for this latest catastrophe bond. The Series 2027-1 Class A notes will generate proceeds to collateralize a reinsurance agreement benefiting Hartford Fire Insurance Co. and its affiliates. This protection specifically targets U.S. named storms and earthquakes, including those affecting D.C. and Puerto Rico, and will span a four-year term concluding in 2030. Structured with an indemnity trigger and operating on a per-occurrence basis, the bond features an initial attachment point of $1.3 billion in losses, extending coverage up to $1.7 billion. The initial attachment probability is 1.93%, with an expected loss of 1.56%, and the notes are being offered with a spread price guidance of 3% to 3.5%. This pricing appears attractive compared to previous issuances, such as the 2023 cat bond (6.25% spread for 1.36% expected loss) and the 2026-1 cat bond (3.5% spread for 1.18% expected loss), indicating a favorable market for The Hartford to potentially increase the size of this offering given the current cost-effectiveness of catastrophe bonds.

The Hartford's consistent engagement with the catastrophe bond market demonstrates a proactive and forward-thinking approach to risk management. By strategically leveraging capital markets, the company not only secures essential multi-peril reinsurance but also contributes to the stability and resilience of its financial operations. This commitment to robust protection ultimately benefits policyholders and reinforces the company's long-term sustainability, showcasing how innovative financial instruments can foster greater security in an unpredictable world.
