In anticipation of 2027, Howden Capital Markets & Advisory (HCMA) is strategically prioritizing two burgeoning sectors: collateralized reinsurance sidecars and the burgeoning data center market. Jarad Madea, HCMA's Chief Executive Officer, conveyed this outlook to Artemis, underscoring these areas as prime avenues for future expansion and investment. The firm aims to leverage the increasing institutional investor interest in these specialized segments of the insurance and reinsurance landscape.

During a recent reinsurance conference, Madea shared HCMA's intentions to forge closer collaborations with institutional investors keen on deploying capital into casualty sidecars. He observed a notable surge in investor participation within the reinsurance market, a stark contrast to just a few years prior. This growing engagement is evident in the firm's recent capital markets dinner, which successfully brought together numerous investors and clients to facilitate direct capital deployment into risk-bearing opportunities. Madea noted the excitement surrounding innovative deal structures that can effectively align the objectives of investors with those of clients, emphasizing the industry’s capacity for generating attractive risk-adjusted returns and offering portfolio diversification.

Madea further elaborated on the substantial influx of favorable returns witnessed over recent years, benefiting insurers, reinsurers, and various investors, including those in catastrophe bonds and property sidecars. He praised the industry's inventiveness in crafting structures that yield the necessary risk-adjusted returns across the entire investment spectrum. For HCMA in 2027, a primary objective will be the expansion of sidecar structures across diverse platforms and geographical regions. This includes exploring options such as Lloyd's, fronting companies, Bermuda balance sheets, and US primary balance sheets, encompassing various risk types from the US, global, and European markets. Beyond assisting clients, HCMA also seeks to advise investors on these transactions, mirroring its M&A advisory approach where it counsels either buyers or sellers, or sometimes both.

Another significant focus for HCMA leading into 2027 is the data center sector, alongside efforts to broaden the reach of alternative capital in Europe and beyond the United States. Madea expressed a strong desire to develop solutions that channel capacity into data centers, a sector currently experiencing rapid growth but with limited engagement from insurance-linked securities (ILS) investors. He perceives this as a substantial opportunity for the ILS industry, despite the current absence of definitive solutions. While acknowledging the inherent risks, Madea stressed the vital role of the insurance market in guiding development and fostering alternative capital participation. He highlighted the collective effort required, involving traditional insurers and reinsurers, to manage and address aggregation risks in concentrated areas, ensuring viable returns for capital providers while maintaining reasonable costs for end-users. This approach, he believes, can lead to geographically diversified portfolios and a broader array of risks, particularly those emerging from data centers and artificial intelligence, thereby enhancing overall portfolio diversification.
