The Miami Heat had reportedly prepared a significant trade proposal for Giannis Antetokounmpo this past offseason, notably crafting it to exclude their star player, Bam Adebayo. This strategy aimed to give the Heat considerable flexibility in assembling an attractive package for the Milwaukee Bucks' acclaimed forward.
However, insiders suggest that Antetokounmpo likely would not have seriously entertained a move to Miami without Adebayo. The two players share the same agent, fostering a close professional relationship. Consequently, any potential offer that did not include the Heat's All-Star center would have been largely inconsequential, as both parties highly value the connection between the two athletes.
Over the summer, Antetokounmpo critically assessed his future in Milwaukee, questioning the Bucks' sustained capability to contend for championships. His agent, Alex Saratsis, engaged with numerous teams expressing interest, yet reports indicated that the New York Knicks were the sole franchise Antetokounmpo was genuinely keen on joining.
The Bucks and Knicks did enter into trade negotiations in August, but these discussions ultimately failed to produce a deal. Milwaukee reportedly deemed New York’s offer insufficient, while the Knicks perceived a lack of firm commitment from the Bucks regarding Antetokounmpo's trade. Despite widespread speculation, Antetokounmpo never formally submitted a trade request, although Milwaukee executives had anticipated one during General Manager Jon Horst's visit to Greece in late July. This marked the first instance where the two-time MVP seriously contemplated options beyond his tenure with the Bucks.
Looking ahead, Antetokounmpo is poised to become eligible for a substantial four-year contract extension, valued at $275 million, commencing October 1, 2026. This potential extension guarantees him long-term financial stability, irrespective of whether he continues with the Bucks or moves to another team following a trade.
