Across Idaho, eight school districts are appealing to voters for a collective $114 million in May's ballot measures. Many of these districts face dire consequences if their funding requests are not approved.

In North Idaho, three districts highlight the urgency of their supplemental levies. Lakeland School District, despite reducing its levy request by $2 million from the previous November, still anticipates losing 25 staff members even if the levy passes. A failure would result in an additional 25 teacher layoffs and the implementation of a pay-to-play model for sports programs. Similarly, West Bonner School District warns that without approval, it will be forced to close two elementary schools, leaving only one operational alongside the junior/senior high school. Boundary County School District also faces significant cuts, with up to 24 staff positions at risk alongside extracurricular funding reductions.

Financial challenges in North Idaho districts are particularly pronounced due to higher operational costs and competition with neighboring states offering better compensation packages for educators.

Filer School District is seeking $52 million to construct a new middle school, enhance career technical education facilities, and improve athletic grounds. This initiative aims to accommodate growth while providing modern educational resources. Meanwhile, Middleton School District plans to address overcrowding through a $19.9 million bond to build a new elementary school capable of serving 600 to 700 students. These proposals reflect broader needs across Idaho for expanded infrastructure and competitive salary structures.

The importance of public support cannot be overstated as these measures directly impact educational quality and community vitality. Approving bonds and levies ensures districts can maintain essential services, attract qualified personnel, and foster environments conducive to student success. By investing in schools, communities affirm their commitment to nurturing future generations and strengthening local economies.
