Indian Rupee's Fortunes Hinge on Dollar Movements and Policy Measures

The Indian rupee's trajectory this week is anticipated to be significantly influenced by the dollar's response to its recent correction and the ongoing concerns about potential U.S. tariffs. The currency market experienced a notable rally last week, with the rupee strengthening against the dollar by 0.7%, marking its best performance in over a year and a half. This surge was largely attributed to interventions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the absence of new U.S. tariffs. Meanwhile, the bond market remains vigilant for any additional liquidity measures from the central bank. Traders anticipate that the rupee will fluctuate within a range of 86.50 to 87.20, while bond yields are expected to hover around 6.65% to 6.75%. The upcoming policy minutes and economic data releases will provide further insights into the monetary direction.

During the past week, the Indian rupee demonstrated resilience, ending at 86.8225 per U.S. dollar. This improvement was driven by several factors. Firstly, the RBI's active involvement in the foreign exchange market played a crucial role in bolstering the currency. Secondly, the decision not to impose new tariffs by the United States added to the positive sentiment. Market analysts noted that the absence of tariffs likely alleviated some of the speculative pressure on the rupee. However, the currency's future movements are expected to closely follow the behavior of the dollar, which saw a decline of about 1% last week. Analysts like Kunal Kurani from Mecklai Financial highlighted that while the rupee has gained strength, it will now be more sensitive to broader global trends, particularly any developments related to trade tensions.

Despite the rupee's gains, the bond market remained relatively stable, with the benchmark 10-year bond yield closing at 6.7071%. Traders observed that the narrow trading range for yields last week reflected cautious market sentiment. The RBI's recent actions, including cutting interest rates by 25 basis points, did not include additional liquidity injections, leading to expectations of tighter liquidity conditions as the fiscal year approaches its end. Market participants remain hopeful for further policy support, especially given the central bank's substantial liquidity infusion of 2.68 trillion rupees over the past month. This includes various measures such as open market operations and long-term repo facilities. The upcoming bond purchase scheduled for Thursday could offer some relief, but the market awaits clearer signals from the RBI regarding future steps.

In the coming days, key economic events will shape both domestic and international markets. In India, the release of February's HSBC Flash manufacturing, services, and composite PMI data, along with the minutes from the RBI's February monetary policy meeting, will provide critical insights into economic health and policy directions. Internationally, U.S. data on housing starts, jobless claims, and business activity will also influence market sentiment. As traders and investors look ahead, the interplay between these factors will determine the path of the rupee and broader financial markets. The anticipation of further rate cuts and liquidity measures adds an element of uncertainty, making close monitoring essential for all stakeholders.
