Insta360 has unveiled its new top-tier 360 camera, the X6, which succeeds last year's X5 model. Significant enhancements include larger sensors, faster 8K recording capabilities, improved low-light performance, and an innovative AI system designed to streamline the editing process for users. These advancements aim to elevate the quality and ease of use for capturing immersive content.
The X6 is equipped with dual Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors, offering a 33% increase in sensor area compared to its predecessor, which Insta360 claims translates to approximately four times more light intake per frame. A sophisticated triple-chip system manages image processing, while new low-light modes and AdaptiveTone 2.0 technology work in tandem to boost detail and dynamic range, even in challenging lighting conditions. Video recording now supports 8K resolution at 50 frames per second in 360 mode, and flat video can reach up to 5K60. The camera also supports 10-bit I-Log and boasts 14.5 stops of dynamic range, making it the first 360 camera to feature native Dolby Vision. Insta360 explains that the X6 processes Dolby Vision metadata internally, adjusting contrast and brightness frame by frame, with 10-bit color providing over 1.07 billion recordable colors.
Beyond its advanced recording capabilities, the X6 is engineered as a versatile 3-in-1 device, functioning as a 360 camera, a single-lens action camera, or a subject-tracking gimbal camera. When paired with the new Foldable Selfie Stick Remote Kit, it can achieve gimbal-style framing through automatic subject tracking. The InstaFrame 2.0 feature automatically tracks individuals, pets, and objects to generate 4K footage, while maintaining an 8K 360-degree recording as a backup. In single-lens mode, the X6 can capture up to 5K60 or 4K120 for slow-motion effects. The camera introduces PanoMind, an AI model trained on over 10,000 hours of footage, enabling its AI Director to analyze on-camera footage and produce a polished highlight video while the device charges. For users desiring more control, Auto Edit 2.0 provides automated framing, cuts, camera movements, music, and transitions. Additionally, Insta360 offers Moments Pro, a cloud-based editor powered by Google Gemini, capable of creating videos based on user prompts detailing subject, mood, style, and timeframe. The X6 also features enhanced durability with a 2.32-inch 1200-nit OLED display, native waterproofing up to 66 feet (20m) without a case, and 47GB of internal storage. The redesigned Replaceable Lens 2.0 system is reportedly five times more scratch-resistant and 60% cheaper to replace. Powering these features is a 2,600mAh Xtreme Battery, providing up to 140 minutes of continuous 8K30fps recording—a 51% improvement over the X5. A 30W fast charger can replenish the battery to 80% in just 24 minutes. For audio, a four-microphone omnidirectional array includes a specialized engine-noise filter, particularly useful for motorcycle enthusiasts.
