Invesco's Equal-Weight Income Fund Outperforms JEPI with Lower Fees

For investors prioritizing consistent monthly payouts and mitigated market fluctuations, the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) has long been a favored choice, amassing substantial assets. However, a less prominent offering from Invesco, known for its QQQ fund, is demonstrating superior performance this year, providing a compelling alternative for those seeking income and growth.

JEPI's strategy involves selling out-of-the-money S&P 500 call options and investing in a low-volatility portfolio of large-cap stocks. This mechanism successfully generates monthly distributions, which has been its primary appeal, especially for retirees relying on regular income. Despite its success in delivering consistent payouts, JEPI's overall returns in 2026 have not kept pace with the broader market, and its projected future payouts appear to be diminishing. This trend suggests that the option premiums the fund collects are no longer as robust as in previous periods, impacting its total return potential.

In contrast, the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Income Advantage ETF (RSPA) employs a different approach, selling option spreads against an equal-weighted S&P 500 index. This distinction means RSPA's underlying portfolio is not overly influenced by a few mega-cap companies, providing broader diversification. RSPA has not only outperformed JEPI in total return by a significant margin this year but also boasts a lower expense ratio, making it a more cost-effective option. Furthermore, RSPA's forward yield is currently higher and on an upward trajectory, unlike JEPI's declining rate. While RSPA is a newer and smaller fund with a shorter track record, its performance metrics indicate a strong advantage for income-focused investors.

In light of these developments, investors might consider reevaluating their positions. While JEPI remains a viable income vehicle, RSPA presents a more attractive proposition with its enhanced yield, superior total return, and reduced fees. A strategic shift, whether partial or complete, could significantly boost an investor's overall earnings, aligning their portfolio more effectively with current market dynamics and maximizing income potential while maintaining a diversified investment strategy. The pursuit of financial well-being requires continuous assessment and adaptation to optimize returns and secure a prosperous future.
