In a candid revelation, actor Jeff Garlin recently shed light on the intensely difficult period he faced following his abrupt departure from the popular sitcom 'The Goldbergs.' He disclosed that the emotional turmoil was so severe that he contemplated ending his own life, a 'dark time' he is now openly discussing to raise awareness about mental health struggles.

The 64-year-old performer, known for his role as Murray Goldberg on the ABC series, shared these personal insights during a recent podcast appearance on 'Where Everybody Knows Your Name.' His exit from 'The Goldbergs' in 2021 was a "mutual decision" with Sony Pictures Television, coming after a three-year human resources investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct on set.

Garlin recounted a moment of profound despair when he reached out to his 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' co-star, Susie Essman, expressing his suicidal ideations. His cry for help led to a rapid intervention by his loved ones, including his ex-wife Marla and girlfriend Sari, along with his close friend Brad Morris. This support network became crucial in preventing a tragic outcome, with Morris staying by his side as arrangements were made for Garlin to receive professional help.

Opting for a non-Hollywood setting, Garlin sought treatment in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he underwent dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). DBT is a form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals who experience intense emotions manage their feelings and behaviors more effectively. During this period, he also received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a condition that had remained undiagnosed throughout his tenure on 'The Goldbergs.'

Reflecting on the past five years, Garlin noted that he is only now beginning to feel a sense of well-being and completeness. He detailed his recovery process, which involved attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, continuing with DBT and traditional therapy, engaging in boxing for physical health, and pursuing creative endeavors like writing his recently released book, 'Best Seat in the House: Moments No One Asked Me to Capture...But I Did Anyway.'

Garlin's decision to share his story stems from a desire to connect with others who may be struggling, emphasizing that mental health challenges affect everyone, regardless of their public persona. He expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support of his family and friends, whose presence was instrumental in his journey towards recovery. His openness serves as a powerful reminder that even those who appear to have it all can face immense internal battles, and that seeking help and having a strong support system are vital steps toward healing.
