In the June edition of the National Savings and Investments (NS&I) premium bonds draw, two fortunate participants were awarded £1 million each. This event not only highlights the thrill of winning but also underlines the significance of checking for unclaimed prizes. The draw involved over 131 billion bond numbers, with a total payout exceeding £416 million across 5.97 million prizes. Participants from Stockport and Edinburgh emerged victorious, marking significant milestones in their respective regions' history with premium bonds.

The first lucky winner hails from Stockport, holding a bond number 103FE583469. With an investment of £50,000 in premium bonds since November 2005, this individual has now become one of the month's millionaires. Meanwhile, another winner from Edinburgh, possessing bond number 352AC359547, also secured a £1 million prize. This participant purchased their winning bond more recently, in November 2017, reflecting the equal chances all bonds have regardless of purchase date or location.

Andrew Westhead, the retail director at NS&I, expressed his excitement over the outcomes. He emphasized that beyond the jackpot winners, ERNIE distributed numerous smaller prizes, infusing joy into the summer months for many bondholders nationwide. Unlike traditional investments that yield interest or dividends, premium bonds offer participants entry into monthly prize draws, where winnings range from £25 to £1 million, exempt from UK income tax and capital gains tax.

Despite the excitement surrounding new winners, there is a notable emphasis on unclaimed prizes. In Edinburgh, there are currently 17,837 unclaimed prizes worth £712,750, including a substantial £25,000 prize from September 2022. Similarly, Stockport has 10,720 unclaimed prizes valued at £494,000, with the largest being a £100,000 prize from September 2010. Bond holders can manage their accounts online or opt for direct payments via BACS to reduce the likelihood of missing out on these opportunities.

Beyond celebrating the latest winners, it's crucial to remember that premium bond prizes never expire. Individuals can claim prizes dating back to the original 1957 draw by utilizing the NS&I website or its mobile application. This system ensures transparency and provides a straightforward method for participants to verify their potential winnings. By engaging with digital tools, bondholders enhance their chances of promptly receiving any awards they may have won.
