BBC broadcaster Lauren Laverne has openly shared how immersing herself in nature has become her anchor through a tumultuous decade marked by significant personal losses and profound health struggles. Following the passing of both her parents, a battle with cancer, and a recent diagnosis of a rare blood and bone marrow disorder, Laverne has discovered that the outdoors provides unparalleled solace and a unique form of 'therapy' as she navigates her challenging journey toward well-being.

Laverne's recent health disclosures have shed light on her resilience. Earlier this month, she revealed her diagnosis of smouldering myeloma, a condition affecting blood and bone marrow. This news arrived less than two years after her public announcement in August 2024 about a cancer diagnosis, from which she was thankfully given the 'all-clear' a few months later. These successive health challenges have underscored the importance of her connection to the natural world.

Reflecting on these experiences, Laverne expressed the profound impact of her garden, stating, "My garden has been massive therapy for me." She elaborated on how her increasing need for outdoor time intensified as she matured and faced more "tricky times." The past eight years have been particularly arduous, encompassing the loss of both her parents and her personal encounters with cancer and other health-related difficulties. Her garden became a sanctuary, offering a consistent source of comfort and recuperation.

She vividly recalled a period of hospitalisation during her cancer treatment, observing a heatwave from her London hospital room overlooking a park. The artificial environment made her yearn for the natural world. "I just remember thinking – god, you know, I've been the same temperature for like weeks and weeks and weeks and the artificial light and everything, it's very strange," she recounted. Upon returning home, her immediate desire was to be outside, highlighting the therapeutic power of nature.

Laverne's smouldering myeloma diagnosis, an asymptomatic condition that can potentially evolve into blood cancer, has reinforced her commitment to self-care and monitoring. Although the risk for her is low and she currently feels well without needing treatment, the chronic nature of the condition means her immune system is somewhat compromised. She attributes her early diagnosis to diligent monitoring, often experienced by cancer survivors. She also emphasized the critical role of her general practitioner, whose insistence on investigating her persistently low iron levels led to the early detection of her condition. Laverne's message to others is to advocate for their health and seek specialist advice when needed.

In the face of these adversities, Laverne has chosen to share her experiences, hoping to assist others confronting similar situations. Despite the difficulties, she has gained invaluable wisdom, which she believes is supporting her now. She extended heartfelt gratitude to her family, friends, the 6 Music team, and her medical professionals, particularly her brilliant therapist and GP, for their unwavering support. She also hinted at a desire to further discuss her journey, promising more insights in the future.
