Macklemore, also known as Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, has been removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour following a controversial pro-Palestinian speech he delivered during a concert in New Jersey. The rapper claims that Robert Kraft, a billionaire and owner of Gillette Stadium, orchestrated his removal by reportedly contacting Sheeran and rallying other stadium owners, threatening to cancel shows if Macklemore remained on the tour.

In a lengthy Instagram statement, Macklemore expressed his disappointment but maintained that he did not blame Sheeran personally, acknowledging the difficult position his friend was put in. He recounted Sheeran's explanation that the phrase 'Free Palestine' and the Palestinian flag were offensive to many, to which Macklemore countered that such sentiments should not outweigh the suffering of Palestinian children. He emphasized that there is no neutrality between the oppressor and the oppressed, highlighting the personal cost he has faced, including loss of endorsements and opportunities, for taking a stand. Kraft, however, defended his decision, stating that Macklemore's actions crossed a line and provided a platform for hate speech, citing a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric.

During his September 5 performance, Macklemore wore a keffiyeh and performed his song 'Hind's Hall' with visuals of Gaza, a track whose proceeds support humanitarian efforts for Palestinian refugees. He explicitly called for a 'Free Palestine,' urging the audience not to forget the people of Gaza and the occupied West Bank. He praised Columbia University students for their activism and clarified that criticism of Israel or Zionism is not an attack on Jewish people. He concluded that if speaking out for Palestine meant losing his stage, it was a successful tour, as it brought the conversation back to the Palestinian cause, which he views as a fundamental human duty.

This incident underscores the complex interplay between artistic expression, political activism, and commercial interests. Macklemore's decision to speak out reflects a commitment to global humanitarian issues, challenging individuals and institutions to consider their ethical responsibilities. His stance encourages us to engage in critical thinking, foster empathy, and advocate for justice, even when confronted with opposition, reminding us that true progress often arises from courageous acts of conscience.
