In recent years, the gaming landscape has witnessed a shift, from popular brain-training applications and battle royale phenomena to a recent slowdown in mobile game growth amidst a surge of AI-generated content. Amidst this evolving environment, Matiks, a gaming company based in India, is striving to redirect individuals toward its platform, offering engaging math, logic, and brain-teaser challenges as a refreshing break from the overwhelming presence of AI-infused media.
The Matiks application, launched two years ago, has recently experienced significant expansion. Its daily user base surged from 22,000 at the beginning of the year to over 300,000 by September. This impressive growth culminated in 2.2 million monthly active users, attracting substantial investor interest. The company recently announced it secured $10 million in pre-Series A funding. This round was spearheaded by General Catalyst, with additional contributions from Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala, InfoEdge Ventures, Tanglin Venture Partners, and Untitled Ventures, bringing Matiks' total funding to over $13.5 million.
Founded by university friends Sudhanshu Bhatia, Mohan Kumar, and Sushant Timmapur, Matiks emerged from Bhatia's background in competitive mental arithmetic. He conceptualized the platform while working on anti-money laundering strategies at American Express. Bhatia noted that while platforms have made entertainment consumption easy, much of it lacks intellectual stimulation. Their goal was to make math-related games as engaging and entertaining as other content, drawing on the existing competitive ecosystems in mental math, puzzles, and memory challenges. The app offers categories such as Math, Puzzle, Memory, and Logic, allowing users to practice against bots and compete with other players. Players can also complete challenges and quests to earn points, maintain streaks, and unlock new games. The platform also introduced an experimental game creation tool called Jelo, allowing users to design their own games, and the company plans to utilize the new funding to expand this platform into new global markets, including localization for regions like the U.S., South Korea, and Japan.
Matiks' journey exemplifies how innovative approaches to digital entertainment can cultivate intellectual engagement and provide a meaningful alternative to passive content consumption. By integrating competitive elements with a focus on cognitive development, Matiks not only provides enjoyment but also promotes mental agility and critical thinking. The company's success underscores the potential of platforms that challenge users and foster a sense of accomplishment, demonstrating that purposeful engagement can thrive in a saturated digital world.
