Meta's previous smart glasses have gained some traction in the market; however, they have also sparked considerable debate among consumers who view them as intrusive surveillance devices. In response to widespread criticism, including accusations of selling 'pervert glasses,' Meta is now reportedly preparing to introduce a version of these glasses that will not include a camera.

According to The Information, Meta's new smart glasses model, known as Luna, will be camera-free and designed primarily for interacting with the company's AI chatbot and Muse, its consumer AI agent. The device will be equipped with six microphones to facilitate communication with the AI system, and a side button will activate the AI features. This new offering is expected to be unveiled at Meta Connect, the company's annual hardware and developer conference, scheduled for next week.

The smart glasses industry has experienced growth, with Meta emerging as a key player. Nevertheless, challenges related to practicality, cost, and privacy have hindered broader adoption, leaving many consumers hesitant about using these devices. Despite these hurdles, and significant financial losses reported by Meta's Reality Labs division, the company continues to innovate in the wearable technology space.

This strategic move by Meta to release camera-free smart glasses reflects a commitment to addressing user privacy concerns while continuing to advance in the burgeoning AI and wearable technology sectors. By focusing on AI integration and mitigating privacy risks, Meta aims to redefine the utility and acceptance of smart glasses, fostering a more positive perception among consumers and potentially expanding its market reach in a socially responsible manner.
