In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Microsoft has introduced a series of advanced capabilities to its AI-driven chatbot, Copilot. The upgraded version now offers the ability to perform actions on most websites, such as booking tickets and reserving restaurants. Additionally, it can remember personal preferences akin to ChatGPT and analyze real-time video from mobile devices. This marks a significant shift as Microsoft reportedly considers integrating more in-house technology into Copilot, which has traditionally relied on OpenAI models. These enhancements aim to keep pace with competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, who have been rapidly expanding their feature sets.

The new functionalities enable Copilot to execute web-based tasks similar to "agentic" tools like OpenAI's Operator. Partnerships with major platforms including 1-800-Flowers.com, Booking.com, and Expedia ensure seamless compatibility from day one. For instance, users can input prompts like "send a bouquet to my partner," and Copilot will attempt to complete the task. Another notable addition is the capability to track online deals, notifying users when prices drop or sales occur on desired items.

Beyond these practical applications, Copilot introduces features that are less ambiguous and potentially less controversial. One standout is its ability to generate podcast-style audio content resembling Google's NotebookLM Audio Overviews. By providing a source material, Copilot crafts engaging dialogues between two synthetic hosts, allowing interruptions for questions at any time. Furthermore, on Android and iOS, Copilot leverages smartphone cameras or photo galleries to answer queries about visible objects, while on Windows, the updated Copilot app can assist with desktop management tasks.

A project-consolidating function called Pages draws inspiration from ChatGPT Canvas and Claude Artifacts, organizing notes and research into actionable documents. Complementing this, Deep Research analyzes information from various sources to address complex inquiries effectively. Lastly, Copilot enhances user experience by remembering personal preferences, offering tailored solutions and proactive suggestions. Users retain control over stored data through a dashboard option to delete individual memories or opt out entirely.

These developments signify Microsoft's commitment to advancing Copilot's utility and user engagement. By incorporating innovative features and ensuring user privacy, Microsoft aims to position Copilot as a leading choice in the competitive AI chatbot landscape. As the revamped Copilot rolls out to select users, expectations are high for its performance and reliability in handling diverse tasks efficiently.
