Forging Futures: Synergy and Talent Propel Thunder's Young Backcourt
Mitchell's High Praise for Teammate Topic's Basketball Acumen
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell recently shared his admiration for fellow rookie Nikola Topic during their Summer League appearances. In a discussion, Mitchell characterized Topic as an outstanding guard with remarkable court awareness, underscoring the Serbian's significant potential.
Cultivating On-Court Harmony in Las Vegas
Mitchell, who joined the Thunder following a draft-night trade, reflected on the evolving connection with Topic as they refined their collaborative play in Las Vegas. He emphasized their mutual understanding of how to seamlessly transition between on-ball and off-ball roles, fostering a strong partnership on the hardwood.
Topic's Summer League Display: Glimpses of Brilliance
Nikola Topic, the 12th overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft, participated in three Summer League contests. During these games, he averaged 11 points and 7.3 assists, showcasing his exceptional passing skills and vision, even with modest shooting efficiency.
Mitchell's Efficient Performance and Thunder Commitment
Mitchell demonstrated remarkable effectiveness throughout the Summer League period, averaging 20 points per game on 51.4 percent shooting, complemented by six rebounds and over four assists per outing. His solid play reinforces the faith the Thunder placed in him earlier in the year when he inked a standard contract.
Championship Experience for Young Thunder Guards
The Belgian guard, Mitchell, already possesses an NBA championship title, having contributed in a reserve capacity during the Thunder's victorious 2025 playoff journey. Remarkably, Topic also secured a championship ring, despite being sidelined for the entire season due to an ACL injury, signifying his integral, albeit off-court, presence within the team's success.
Future Prospects: Building the Thunder's Dynasty
Oklahoma City continues to assess the capabilities of its promising backcourt talent, as the organization strategically builds its future core around established stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. Should Mitchell and Topic sustain their impressive development, they are poised to become pivotal figures in the Thunder's continued ascent.
