Netflix is poised to unveil its latest ambitious production, 'Under Siege' (also known as 'Palacio'), an eight-part series that delves into one of Colombia's most traumatic historical events: the 1985 siege of the Palace of Justice. This series, born from extensive research and a commitment to authenticity, aims to present a comprehensive narrative of the two-day ordeal and its lasting impact.

Unveiling a Nation's Scar: The Palace of Justice Siege Reimagined

The Imminent Release and Creative Vision Behind 'Under Siege'

Scheduled for a November 6th debut on Netflix, 'Under Siege' ('Palacio') is a fictionalized account drawing inspiration from the dramatic takeover of Colombia's Palace of Justice by M-19 guerrillas and the subsequent military operation to reclaim it. The series brings together a formidable directorial team, including Edgar Nito, Samir Oliveros, and the internationally recognized Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante, known for his Berlin Festival win and his recent Oscar-contending feature, 'Mountains of Fire'.

Reconstructing a Defining Historical Event: The 1985 Palace Siege

The narrative arc of the series centers on the events of November 6th and 7th, 1985, when the M-19 guerrilla group stormed the Palace of Justice in Bogotá, holding over 300 individuals, including Supreme Court justices, hostage. The subsequent military intervention led to a tragic outcome, with at least 94 lives lost among justices, guerrillas, civilians, and military personnel. The series also traces the unyielding pursuit of truth and justice by the victims' families over more than two decades.

A Meticulous Production: Dynamo's Dedication to Authenticity

The series is a brainchild of Dynamo, a veteran Colombian production company celebrating its 20th anniversary, acclaimed for its work on 'Narcos'. The creation of 'Under Siege' involved seven years of painstaking research, incorporating archival materials, eyewitness testimonies, and in-depth interviews to craft a compelling and nuanced narrative. Netflix's VP of Latin American Content, Francisco Ramos, emphasized the project's scale, calling it a "huge undertaking" and reiterating the platform's dedication to authenticity in portraying such a sensitive historical event.

Ambitious Set Design and Collaborative Storytelling

Filming primarily took place in Bogotá, featuring an expansive 4,000-square-meter set constructed over three months, which included a 30-meter replica of the Palace of Justice's original facade. The writing team, led by showrunner Natalia Santa ('One Hundred Years of Solitude'), along with Enrique Videla, Enrique Lozano, Jenny Ceballos, and Estefanía Piñeres, collaborated to weave a multi-faceted story. This endeavor marks another significant investment by Netflix in Colombian productions, capitalizing on the country's growing talent pool and production incentives.

Star-Studded Ensemble and Production Team

The series boasts a talented cast, including Natalia Reyes ('Terminator: Dark Fate'), Carlos Manuel Vesga, Robinson Díaz, Luna Baxter, Mariana Gómez, Santiago Alarcón, Nicole Santamaría, Andrés Castañeda, and Camilo Amores. Mariana Berenguer and Mirlanda Torres served as producers, with Andrés Calderón and Torres also taking on executive producer roles, bringing this monumental story to the screen with dedication and precision.
