At the intersection of climate challenges and future sustainability lies the agrifood sector, a pivotal player in global emissions yet also a critical domain for transformative change. Agriculture's significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions necessitates a shift toward sustainable practices. To address this, Climate Bonds has introduced an innovative Agrifood Transition Framework. This tool aims to guide financial institutions and stakeholders through the complexities of funding a credible, equitable, and scientifically aligned transition within the agrifood system. The framework emphasizes not only mitigation but also adaptation, nature conservation, and social equity, building on existing principles and criteria.

The agrifood sector is responsible for a staggering 35% of global GHG emissions, underlining the urgency for a credible transition strategy. The newly launched framework supports investors and financial entities in evaluating the reliability of agrifood companies' transition plans across the entire value chain, from producers to retailers. Beyond emission reduction, it advocates for a comprehensive transformation encompassing deforestation prevention, dietary shifts, resilience improvement, and food security enhancement. Aligned with international standards such as ICMA and TCFD, it integrates Climate Bonds' hallmarks of a credible transition, including Paris-aligned targets, robust planning, near-term implementation, internal governance, and transparency.

By utilizing recognized regulatory frameworks like TNFD, CDP, and ESRS, the framework ensures consistency with best global practices. It provides actionable steps for companies and financiers, ranging from renewable energy adoption and circularity to alternative proteins and precision agriculture. Companies are categorized based on their transition maturity levels—committed or advanced—depending on their progress in setting science-based targets and implementing strategies. Crucial aspects include setting multi-term targets for various greenhouse gases, promoting deforestation-free sourcing, establishing traceability systems, and ensuring transparent reporting.

Credibility in transition demands accountability, achieved through board-level oversight, independent verification of emissions, and annual disclosures. Standardized metrics and recommendations facilitate informed decision-making by investors, reducing greenwashing risks and aligning with global disclosure standards. With this framework, Climate Bonds establishes a new benchmark for agrifood sector transition, focusing on holistic, ambitious, and practical solutions. Additional certifications and guidance on decarbonization are in development for further advancements in 2025.

Climate Bonds invites all stakeholders to embrace this framework as a guiding tool for meaningful climate action within the agrifood sector. As we look forward, this initiative promises a more sustainable and resilient future for global agrifood systems, ensuring they remain viable amidst ongoing climate changes.
