Good news for existing Apple TV 4K users: Apple has confirmed that the sophisticated Siri AI functionalities, initially thought to be exclusive to its latest streaming box, will also be extended to older models. Devices from the second and third generations of Apple TV 4K, launched in 2021 and 2022 respectively, are set to receive these enhancements via the forthcoming tvOS 27.2 update, expected later this autumn. This strategic move allows a broader user base to access cutting-edge AI features without immediate hardware upgrades.

Among the key improvements is a more intuitive conversational search for entertainment, enabling users to interact with Siri using natural language and refine their requests through follow-up questions. This innovation aims to simplify the discovery of desired content. Additionally, Siri AI will leverage personal context from compatible paired devices, although this requires the Home app's designated owner to possess an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the most current software, with Siri AI activated and configured in a supported language. Initially, this feature will be available in English across eight countries, including major markets like the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.

While these updates bring significant value, some distinctions between the newer and older models will persist. The latest Apple TV 4K boasts integrated far-field microphones for hands-free voice commands, a feature absent in its predecessors. The extent to which older models’ remote microphones will fully support the new Siri AI capabilities, as well as the full suite of smart home controls within tvOS 27.2, remains to be clarified. Apple’s broader strategy also encompasses an enhanced smart home ecosystem, including a new HomeView hub and updated HomePod mini. The precise release date for tvOS 27.2 is yet to be announced, though the newest Apple TV 4K is slated for release on November 13.

This update demonstrates Apple's commitment to enhancing the longevity and utility of its existing hardware, offering a practical solution for users to enjoy advanced AI functionalities without the immediate need for new purchases. Such forward-thinking initiatives contribute to a more sustainable and user-friendly technology landscape.
