OnePlus 15 Series Embraces ColorOS Beta Ahead of Android 17 Rollout

OnePlus has initiated a major transition in its software ecosystem, moving from its long-standing OxygenOS to ColorOS. This strategic pivot is now evident with the launch of the first global Closed Beta Testing program for its flagship devices, the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus 15R. This development arrives as the company reorients its market focus, particularly after withdrawing from smartphone sales in the US and European regions.

OnePlus 15 and 15R Receive Early ColorOS Beta, Exclusively for Indian Users

On August 7, 2026, OnePlus officially unveiled its Closed Beta Testing (CBT) program for the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus 15R. This marks a pivotal moment in the company's commitment to migrating its operating system to ColorOS, a move that has been anticipated since OnePlus announced its departure from the US and European smartphone markets. The beta software is highly likely to be built upon the upcoming Android 17, as preliminary testing for this Android version on the OnePlus 15 commenced in March.

Crucially, this initial beta phase is restricted to users in India who own the Indian variants of the OnePlus 15 and 15R. Despite the global availability of these devices, OnePlus has opted to localize its first ColorOS beta rollout. A total of 300 testers for each model are being sought, and applicants must be active members of the OnePlus Community, agree to a stringent non-disclosure agreement, and join a dedicated Telegram group for direct communication with the software development team. The application window for this exclusive testing phase is narrow, running only from August 6 to August 7.

OnePlus has made it clear that this is an early iteration of the software. Participants are explicitly forbidden from sharing any information related to the beta, including screenshots, interface specifics, benchmark results, or update packages. The ColorOS beta builds will automatically activate Experience Improvement Programs and conduct overnight automatic updates. The company also cautions testers to anticipate potential bugs and advises them to back up all data before proceeding with the installation.

This regional exclusivity is likely to be a point of contention for OnePlus users in the US and Europe. While previous OxygenOS beta programs were often open to participants from these regions, last year's OxygenOS 16 beta was also confined to India. This trend suggests that OnePlus may continue to prioritize the Indian market for its software development and testing initiatives, leaving Western users to await the stable public release of ColorOS later in the year, with no official timeline yet provided for a broader rollout.

This strategic move by OnePlus to consolidate its software offerings under ColorOS, initially in the Indian market, highlights the company's evolving global strategy. It underscores a commitment to continuous software support for its existing devices, even as it navigates shifts in its primary markets. For consumers, this transition promises a unified user experience across OnePlus devices, albeit with a staggered rollout that prioritizes certain geographical regions.
