Pelicans Make Key Roster Changes Ahead of Season
New Orleans Pelicans Release Forwards Brooks and McDaniels
The New Orleans Pelicans have officially parted ways with forwards Garrison Brooks and Jalen McDaniels. This decision, confirmed by the team, follows their signing to Exhibit 10 training camp agreements, which are often precursors to G League assignments.
Transition to the G League Affiliate
Following their release, both Brooks and McDaniels are anticipated to join the Birmingham Squadron, the New Orleans Pelicans' G League affiliate. This common practice provides a development pathway for players and allows teams to retain rights while they gain experience.
Financial Incentives for G League Participation
Under the terms of their Exhibit 10 agreements, Brooks and McDaniels are eligible for a bonus of up to $85,300 in addition to their standard NBAGL salaries, provided they remain with the Birmingham Squadron for a minimum of 60 days. This incentive encourages players to stay within the team's system.
Garrison Brooks' Professional Journey
Garrison Brooks, 26, began his professional basketball career after going undrafted in 2022 out of Mississippi State. His journey has included a stint with the Westchester Knicks in the G League, as well as playing professionally overseas in both Korea and Lithuania.
Jalen McDaniels' Extensive NBA Background
Jalen McDaniels, 27, possesses a more extensive NBA background. Drafted 52nd overall in the second round in 2019, he spent three and a half seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. His career has also seen him play for various other NBA franchises, including Philadelphia, Toronto, Sacramento, San Antonio, and Washington.
McDaniels' NBA Performance and Statistics
Although McDaniels has been on multiple NBA rosters, his significant regular season playing time occurred with the Sixers, Raptors, and Wizards after leaving the Hornets. Throughout his 252 NBA appearances, the San Diego State alum has maintained career averages of 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, with shooting percentages of .449 from the field, .322 from three-point range, and .777 from the free-throw line.
