A Rapid Departure: Shackelford's Short Stint with the Suns
Shackelford's Brief Return to the Phoenix Roster
Jaden Shackelford, a 24-year-old guard, experienced a very short second stint with the Phoenix Suns. News sources confirm that the team decided to part ways with him merely a day after his official signing. This swift decision marks another uncertain point in the young player's professional basketball career.
Impressive Performance in the G League
Prior to rejoining the Suns, Shackelford had a notable season with the Valley Suns, Phoenix's G League affiliate. During his time there, he showcased his offensive capabilities, averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game over 34 appearances. His aggressive three-point shooting, attempting more than nine per contest, was a significant aspect of his game.
From Undrafted to G League Champion
Shackelford's professional journey began in 2022 when he went undrafted out of Alabama. He subsequently found his footing in the G League with the Oklahoma City Blue. His contributions were instrumental in helping the Oklahoma City Blue secure the 2024 G League championship before he transitioned into the Suns' developmental program.
Scoring Prowess and Prior G League Success
Shackelford's primary asset on the court has always been his scoring. His ability to consistently put up points and his high-volume perimeter shooting earned him consideration for two-way contracts. In his rookie G League season in 2022-23, he averaged 15.0 points, followed by 13.1 points per game in 2023-24.
Previous Exhibit 10 Deal and Current Uncertainties
Last autumn, the Suns had previously signed Shackelford to an Exhibit 10 deal, only to waive him shortly after. He was later brought back into their system through their developmental pathways. Unfortunately for Shackelford, his latest opportunity with the Phoenix organization has concluded in a similar manner, casting doubt on his immediate professional future.
The Suns' Guard Depth and Limited Roster Space
The decision to waive Shackelford was largely influenced by the Phoenix Suns' current roster composition. The team's backcourt is already robust, with established players such as Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Grayson Allen, and Dillon Brooks commanding significant playing time. This existing depth severely restricted any long-term roster availability for Shackelford.
