Pony.ai has made a significant stride in the realm of autonomous logistics by revealing its latest autonomous electric truck, a collaborative effort with GAC Commercial Vehicle. This advanced vehicle is designed to streamline freight operations, marking a notable advancement in self-driving technology for commercial applications.

The newly unveiled heavy-duty truck represents the fourth generation (Gen-4) of Pony.ai's Robotruck platform, operating at Level 4 autonomy. It is founded on GAC Commercial Vehicle's T9 battery-electric truck framework, with production scheduled to commence later in the year. The initial deployment strategies target crucial areas such as long-distance freight, specialized logistics routes, and port transportation.

He Xing, Vice President at Pony.ai and the head of its Robotruck division, emphasized the importance of this launch: "The global debut of the T9 autonomous heavy-duty truck, in partnership with GAC Commercial Vehicle, signifies a crucial milestone in accelerating the widespread production and operational deployment of Pony.ai's Robotrucks." He further stated their intention to deepen the collaboration, pushing forward the manufacturing and deployment of the T9 Robotrucks, and bringing these co-developed autonomous trucking solutions to a global market.

The Gen-4 Robotruck is outfitted with an automotive-grade autonomous driving kit (ADK) that incorporates an array of sensors: nine lidars, three millimeter-wave radars, and thirteen cameras, collectively offering an exhaustive 360-degree environmental perception. This sophisticated sensor suite enables the truck to navigate complex scenarios autonomously.

A remarkable aspect of this new generation is the substantial reduction in hardware costs for the ADK, which has seen a 70 percent decrease compared to its predecessor. Furthermore, projections indicate a 30 percent reduction in transportation operating costs per ton-kilometer, highlighting the economic benefits of this advanced technology. Beyond cost efficiency, the truck also boasts improved energy efficiency, complemented by aerodynamic enhancements. Pony.ai's control algorithms work in tandem with the T9 cab's impressive 0.4 drag coefficient (Cd), leading to a 10 percent energy consumption reduction compared to conventional heavy-haulage trucks.

The Gen-4 Robotruck integrates its central domain controller with the unified 'Virtual Driver' software, a system also utilized in Pony.ai's seventh-generation (Gen-7) robotaxis. This software is directly coupled with GAC Commercial Vehicle's drive-by-wire chassis, ensuring a seamless interface between intelligence and mechanics. To guarantee dependable driverless operation, the truck features comprehensive hardware redundancies across vital systems, including steering, braking, power supply, computing, sensors, and communications.

This rapid development is the result of a strategic agreement signed on April 16, which saw both companies achieve production readiness within a mere five months. Pony.ai's commitment to autonomous trucking dates back to 2018, having since cultivated a diverse fleet that includes both heavy and light-duty platforms. The company's commercial logistics initiatives involve collaborations with vehicle manufacturers and transport operators across various sectors such, port logistics, urban delivery, and long-haul transportation. A key feature of their approach is the application of identical core software across both passenger robotaxis and heavy transport vehicles.

Following its initial domestic production phase this year, Pony.ai plans to broaden its Robotruck operations into European and Middle Eastern markets over the next two years. This expansion into freight services will leverage the established presence from its robotaxi deployments in countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Croatia, Luxembourg, Singapore, and South Korea.

Pony.ai's introduction of the autonomous electric truck represents a pivotal step towards a more efficient and sustainable future for global logistics, promising significant operational advancements and cost savings across various freight applications.
