The Somerville Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees has announced a significant bond election aimed at revitalizing the district's infrastructure. The proposed $42 million package is designed to address long-standing needs and bring the district's facilities up to par with neighboring communities. During an informational meeting, district leaders provided insights into how these funds would be allocated across various projects, emphasizing improvements on the main campus and district-wide enhancements. Superintendent Eric Holton outlined the two primary categories of projects: those focused on the main campus and others benefiting the entire district. The bond comes with a financial impact on local taxpayers, including an estimated increase in property taxes.
Transforming the Main Campus
The majority of the bond funds, totaling $33 million, are earmarked for transformative projects on the main campus. These initiatives aim to modernize existing structures while introducing new facilities that cater to diverse educational needs. The centerpiece of this effort is the construction of a brand-new high school, which will serve as a cornerstone for future generations. Additionally, plans include repurposing the current high school into a junior high, creating specialized spaces for career technical education, and enhancing athletic areas with enclosed walkways.
To further support students' academic and extracurricular pursuits, the district intends to build an agricultural barn, fostering hands-on learning experiences. The renovation of key facilities such as the high school gym and band hall will ensure that students have access to well-maintained environments conducive to their development. By connecting these areas through enclosed hallways, the district aims to create a more cohesive and accessible campus layout, promoting safety and convenience for all users. This comprehensive approach underscores the district's commitment to providing state-of-the-art resources for its students and staff.
Enhancing District-Wide Facilities
Beyond the main campus, the remaining $9 million of the bond will be invested in district-wide projects that benefit the broader community. These initiatives focus on upgrading and preserving critical infrastructure, ensuring that all students have access to modern facilities regardless of their location within the district. Key among these efforts is the reinforcement and preservation of Yegua Stadium, a vital hub for sports activities. The addition of essential amenities like restrooms, concession stands, and locker rooms will enhance the overall experience for athletes and spectators alike.
The bond also allocates funds for installing synthetic turf on the football field, renovating the high school gym, and constructing separate weight rooms for boys and girls. To promote inclusivity and accessibility, the softball field will be relocated closer to the football field, and new features such as batting cages, concession stands, and press boxes will be added. These improvements not only elevate the quality of athletic facilities but also foster a stronger sense of community within the district. While the bond does come with a financial burden for taxpayers, it represents a strategic investment in the future of Somerville ISD, promising long-term benefits for both students and residents.
