A groundbreaking renovation project at Hughson High School is set to take off this spring, thanks to the unexpectedly successful sale of bonds aimed at funding its first phase. Superintendent Brenda Smith expressed enthusiasm about the progress, noting that the school's aging infrastructure will soon receive a much-needed update. Phase 1 focuses on upgrading three classroom wings—the 40, 30, and 10 wings—alongside enhancements to the Ella Webb Theater, which include new seating and carpeting. Additionally, improvements such as new roofing, HVAC systems, and storm drainage upgrades are planned, all estimated to cost approximately $9 million.

The construction schedule has been carefully mapped out, starting with the 40 wing in July. This area, located west of the old gym, will be transformed by reconfiguring three oddly shaped classrooms into five standard-sized ones, complete with updated flooring, walls, and paint. The bathrooms will also see renovations with new fixtures and stalls. Following this, work on the 30 wing near the campus office will commence next January, modernizing four classrooms with fresh windows, flooring, and exterior paint. Finally, the 10 wing renovations will wrap up the first phase in the summer of 2026, ensuring that all affected teachers and students have temporary accommodations during construction periods.

With the initial bond sales exceeding expectations, the community can look forward to even more ambitious plans. Phase 2, scheduled for early 2026, will revitalize Husky Memorial Stadium and introduce new agricultural and science buildings. Meanwhile, Phase 3, beginning in mid-2027, envisions relocating the district offices to create additional space for middle and elementary schools, alongside improved facilities on farm property. Notably, Moody’s recent upgrade of Hughson’s bond rating reflects the district's robust financial health and stable enrollment growth, resulting in reduced property tax burdens for local landowners. This achievement underscores the importance of prudent fiscal management and highlights the positive impact it can have on educational facilities and the broader community.
