A French artificial intelligence company, Mistral, has introduced a new model named Mistral Medium 3, which emphasizes efficiency without sacrificing performance. This innovative model is available through Mistral’s API at competitive rates of $0.40 per million input tokens and $20.80 per million output tokens. According to the company, it performs comparably or better than Anthropic's higher-priced Claude Sonnet 3.7 across various benchmarks. Additionally, it surpasses recent open-source models such as Meta’s Llama 4 Maverick and Cohere’s Command A in widely recognized evaluations. Each million tokens equates roughly to 750,000 words, significantly exceeding the length of literary classics like "War and Peace."

This latest offering from Mistral is designed for versatile deployment options. It can be utilized on any cloud platform, including self-hosted environments equipped with four GPUs or more. In terms of cost-effectiveness, Mistral claims that its model outperforms leading competitors like DeepSeek v3 in both API and self-deployed configurations. Established in 2023, Mistral quickly established itself as a frontier model lab, developing an array of AI-driven services including Le Chat, a chatbot platform, and mobile applications. Backed by prominent venture capital firms such as General Catalyst, Mistral has secured over €1.1 billion in funding thus far. Its clientele includes major organizations like BNP Paribas, AXA, and Mirakl.

Mistral Medium 3 excels particularly in coding and STEM-related tasks, showcasing strong capabilities in multimodal understanding. Financial services, energy, and healthcare sectors have been beta testing this model for diverse applications such as customer service enhancement, workflow automation, and complex data analysis. Besides Mistral’s API, where enterprise clients can collaborate to fine-tune the model, it will also be accessible via Amazon’s Sagemaker platform starting Wednesday. Future availability is expected on platforms such as Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry and Google’s Vertex AI. The release follows the introduction of Mistral Small 3.1 in March, with hints of a larger model coming soon. Additionally, Mistral launched Le Chat Enterprise, a business-oriented chatbot service featuring tools like an AI agent builder and integrations with third-party platforms like Gmail and Google Drive. As it moves into general availability, Le Chat Enterprise will support MCP, enhancing connectivity with systems housing crucial data, aligning with industry standards set by other major providers.

The emergence of Mistral Medium 3 signifies a significant leap forward in the field of artificial intelligence, demonstrating how innovation and affordability can coexist. By providing robust solutions tailored to specific industries and fostering seamless integration with existing systems, Mistral not only enhances operational efficiency but also paves the way for broader adoption of AI technologies across various sectors. Such advancements underscore the potential for technology to democratize access, empowering businesses of all sizes to harness the power of AI effectively.
